CAREERS: School Secretary/Administrative Assistant Questions

1-Does anyone know what type of requirements you need in order to apply for a job as:

Administrative Assistant in NY Elementary Public Schools?

Administrative Assistant in NY Elementary Catholic Schools?

2-Where would I find a list of job opportunities and Salary averages, for both Public and Catholic school systems?

3-Is there a waiting list? How long is the wait?

And any other helpful information would be greatly appreciated - TIA

Re: CAREERS: School Secretary/Administrative Assistant Questions

My mother did this. She took a test to become certified as a clerk typist I believe it was called. The test is administered by the state. Once you get your grade your put on a list and they send you job opportunities that open up. It could be in schools or state buildings. My mother works at Suffolk Community.

She started out not making much but the benefits are great and she has been getting steady raises over the years. She loves it.

Re: CAREERS: School Secretary/Administrative Assistant Questions

You have to take the civil servants test. My mother is also a qualified clerk typist. Depending on how you score on the test, you're placed on a list and are sent notification of available jobs when they come up.

Re: CAREERS: School Secretary/Administrative Assistant Questions

I work at a state college so all our secretaries have taken this test to be placed here. You can be placed in any school or county office. I believe starting here is about $20-25,000, but that may increase with a much higher test score. Once here, you can take the next exam to move up a salary grade--then when a job becomes available, you can move to a new one and get the increase.

Private or parochial schools would be totally different.

Do you have to study for this test, i.e. What kind of questions? Is there a book?

And one more question, can you pick the neighborhood?

Re: CAREERS: School Secretary/Administrative Assistant Questions

I took the Civil Service test...I forget what the exact title of the test was. I scored pretty well and get things mailed to me pretty often about job openings. Many that I've gotten have been way out east. I got one recently for South Country SD, but I heard it's a bad district and didn't respond.

Re: CAREERS: School Secretary/Administrative Assistant Questions

yeah the civil service test is the way to go. you don't know what will come up! i would think pay would be better in public schools than private ones.
