My parents dog is having major back problems. UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nathan, my parent's dachshund is having back problems. This morning he would walk and his feet would just collapse from under him. So they took him to the vet this morning and they told my parents that is was back problems and gave him steriods and that if it doesn't get better they will have to take him to a specialist.

Well, soon after that he couldnt walk at all or get up. I hope that they can do something about this. I just love Nathan to death and would hate to see anything bad happen. I know Dachshunds are susceptible to getting back problems you just never think it gonna be your pet.

My mom is not taking this well at all. Nathan is her life. Im just praying that he will be alright.

This happened to my MiniPin, and if it is the same problem as long as the muscles don't atrophy then the steroids can be helpful.

Nathan went to the specialist and he needs an operation. The outcome is good they said - a 95% success rate. He just has to be in the hospital for 5-6 days and its gonna cost some major bucks, but it is sooooo worth it.

this is pretty common in his breed unfortunatly. glad to hear it has such a high success rate!

Please keep us posted on poor Nathan. As you may recall, I have a dachshund pup and I went through the back surgery with my first dachshund. It is often harder for us than it is for the dog!!!

Well, Nathan had the surgery and so far so good. Its too early to tell, but the doctor said he stood up but is a little wobbly on one side. Supposedly, the vet said that he should be back to his old self again in like a month. I just feel bad for my parents because its gonna be so hard to try and control his jumping especially at age 10. He just loves to lay on them and cuddle up to them while they are on the couch and bed.

I went to my parents today and it was so weird not having Nathan greet you. I miss him and cant wait to have him home!!!!!!!

Nathan is coming home tomorrow. Yay!!! The vet said he is doing so good. We are the happiest people ever.
