AW: I changed my last name today! UPDATE: Got my passport back!

So I finally went down to the SS center - which was a HUGE PITA because I live in Brooklyn and I had to go downtown (can't go to a regular center

) but I went with my downloaded application filled out, my marriage certificate and passport and I am officially Mrs. R!

I have to admit it was hard and I felt sad getting rid of my dad's last name (and my mom's because I was born in PR I was able to have both in my SS card), but I chose to, so I'll get over it. The card comes in about 10-15 days they said...so what's next oh wise married ladies?

Then you take it down to DMV. They will retake your pic and there is a $5 fee. Once you get your license then you can change your car title (if you own it outright) or lease/loan agreement, car insurance. Then there is a new passport.

Have you changed your medical insurance, life insurance, professional licenses, banks, investments, subscriptions, credit cards, oh, and don't foget to register with your local board of elections. Most brides forget to do that one until election day and it is often too late.

OK, so I will change my license when I visit my family (all my info is out of state) but I'll let the car company know. I can't change my insurance or any work info until my SS card comes in, but I just mailed in my passport, marriage certificate and ammendment form and hope to get those back in the 6-8 weeks they promise.

I'll do the credit cards and thanks for hte Board of Elec. tip. I have to do the Bank in person, so I'll wait for my marriage license and passport to come back. YEAY!

And azoodie...I know, it's not a fun process, but it's exciting somehow!

UPDATE:

I received my new SS card in the mail today!

It looks bizarre and oh so foreign, but I'm sure I'll adjust!

Now I have to change my name and all tax crap at work...

Waiting on my passport to come back ammended...

All credit cards are changed...bank is next.

I feel so official and strangely happy!

I got the nicest piece of mail today...and jsut as suven said, it came in about 3 weeks. My passport came today!

It's ammended with a line in the back (looks like a computer scan) and says '-This passport was amended Aug 15 2005 to change the bearer's name to read First Middle NewLastName.'

It was free, painless and I got my marriage certificate back (I was worried about that)...no problems...wanted to share.

Oh good I mailed out my passport application about a week and a half to two weeks ago.

Now that we are buying a new house I really want my marriage license back asap.

So good to hear this...I had sent mine last week but got it returned yesterday since it was short on postage by a few cents, ugh! Just resent it today.
