NWR-Anyone going to grad school for teaching
Isn't annoying how in grad school the format you have to type your lesson plans in! It is sooo not what I do in my job! This are soooo technical. I feel like i am paying 2K a class just to NOT use all the stuff while I am working! Arrrrgh, just frustrating!
I teach math and it is soo annoying to type all this stuff out! Whatever I will do what I am asked and just take my A and leave..I just want my Masters for a nice raise

I teach graduate education classes and I usually ask my students who are already teaching to use the same format that they have to use at their jobs. Was this even an option for you?

Nope! WIsh it was. Oh well, I mean I see why it it good to write it in this format but I dont feel this is what I look at and teach from. But it is good to know how to do. Just frustrating. Oh well! THat is cool that you do that!

Re: NWR-Anyone going to grad school for teaching
When I was at CW Post every professor had a different style in which they wanted our lesson plans...it was a PIA
But since I wasn't teaching it helped me to learn which format I liked.....all in all I think that Grad school for education was a waste of money

As a Prof...I'm hoping that my students don't feel the way you do....What would have made your graduate education classes useful?
Would love to know.

honestly, make things useful, not idealistic. give ideas and samples of real lessons. lessons that were ACTUALLY taught in a classroom and are proven to work. give us lessons that DON'T work--and show us why. there's no other way to learn what works and what doesn't.
teach specific strategies--for my reading masters, we were told about all these great strategies--but never given direct instruction about how to do it. the profs should literally do the strategies for the masters students. don't have us read about it. have us DO it.
papers for an education masters are fluff. they don't help us teach. actual practicals and learning methods and strategies help. useless reading and homework doesn't.
i can't tell you how many 'fluffy' papers i've written in my life. never really learned much from them i learned the most from one education prof in undergrad--who actually DID science experiments with us, and demonstrated HOW we should teach them to students. then we practiced. it was hands on, practical and USEFUL.
hope that helps! FM if you have any other questions.

I agree. I teach in a tough school and I felt like most of my profs had no idea what our experience was like.

Re: NWR-Anyone going to grad school for teaching
Hi Girls!Thought I would chime in..I will be starting Molloy for Grad school in Sept. This will also be my first year teaching, I got first grade. I know the school's format is hard and not what we do. I got my BA like 5 years ago and still think it was a waste but I am with you all I need the raise and my Perm cert. Good Luck all!

Re: NWR-Anyone going to grad school for teaching
Learning how to write out formal lesson plans actually helped me because whenever I get observed this is exactly what my administrators are looking for from me, so i dont feel it was acomplete waste...

Re: NWR-Anyone going to grad school for teaching
I am at Dowling for my Grad degree and I love it.I dunno I find it useful to see many different formats to plan lessons in and the different ideas these professors (who are mostly teaching full time in the day as well) have to say.

Re: NWR-Anyone going to grad school for teaching
I just graduated from Dowling with my Master's degree in Education and I had no prior teaching experience. So, for me, writing lesson plans helped me analyze and understand each part of the lesson plan format. I found it useful. Now I know how to create a lesson to meet certian objectives.Welcome New Vendors
