Social Security Question
So I paid the 14 bucks and downloaded the form off the internet. When I go to SS tomorrow, does this mean i dont have to pay at all? What if I didnt have the form? Would I have to pay then?TIA

Re: Social Security Question
Because I was going to mail my marriage licence in bc I didnt realize there was a SS office 3 blocks from work in Melville and I didnt have the time to go to any of the others...so I had to pay 14 to download the form..

Re: Social Security Question
I'm just so confused. Are you certain that you were on the government's SS website? Because the form to change your name is a PDF form that is free to download. I'm not sure why it prompted you to pay anything. Name changes are free...unless the $14 fee is for mailing and processing.

Re: Social Security Question
It sounds like you bought a name change kit on one of those sites that don't make it obvious that they're not the SS office....

Re: Social Security Question
you shouldn't have had to pay. especially not for a form. make sure it's legit. i'll bet it's from a for-profit website not related to the real SS

Re: Social Security Question
that wasn't the social security office. You have to be careful with that and your passport- both are free to do a name change. But, there are so many 'mock' sites that charge.
One thing I always remind myself is that the SS office and Passport sites both end with .org NOT .com

Re: Social Security Question
I'm concerned now! Did you type in your SS number on that website? Please make sure it's not a scam relating to identiy theft. Good luck!
