My Name is Changed--with Social Security

I started the name change ball rolling by going to SS on Friday. So easy--it was a shame I couldn't get to the DMV before 4 that day, or I would have done my license too.

Next is with HR at work, then my bank. That promises to be harder--they actually want me to have some of the paperwork notarized, and I need to drop it off at HR which is about an hour away from the location I work at. My work schedule is packed right now, and I'm having a little trouble squeezing this in. Oh well, it'll get done.

How did you get your license so quick??? I am still waiting for mine. I wanted to do this all while I was off. My DH booked my plane ticket for Thanksgiving in my married name so now I am getting worried...

Re: My Name is Changed--with Social Security

I didn't get my license yet. Trotted over there, but they were closed by the time I arrived.

I went to SS in Brooklyn, located on Fulton Street between Hudson and Rockland? Street, at least I think it's Rockland!

SS was easy--not much of a line, and the form took no time to fill out. You need to bring the marriage license, your old SS card, and another piece of ID.

Check with the place where you got married. You're referring to the marriage certificate, correct? The license is what you, DH and witnesses sign then the officiant sends it in and you get your marriage certificate. I did it in Queens and it was waiting for me when I came back from my HM...it shouldn't be that long...check, just in case it was misdirected.

Re: My Name is Changed--with Social Security

I am confused. We need to wait to get something back from the Town Clerk where the license is filed before we can go to SS and everywhere else to change our names.

Is this correct?

Yes. The license (which you get the same day and is valid for 60 days before the wedding, but can't be used 48 hours prior) is the document that gets signed by your officiant, yourself, your FH and your 2 witnesses. The ceremony is for 'show' but this is what makes it 'legal'. This license gets submitted by your officiant (you don't get it back on the day of your wedding) to the Town Clerk as proof that you were legally married. Then the Town Clerk issues you a marriage Certificate which gets mailed to your house. This certificate will have your spouse's name, your name and new surname (if applicable). This is what you use to change your passport, SS card and so on.

Hope that helped!

Re: My Name is Changed--with Social Security

Sorry I didn't reply Christine and others, I've been off the board for a few days. Yeah, I got my license back the week following the wedding. It was in the mailbox when I returned from my honeymoon. I would contact the county clerk's office to see if they received it. Our minister mailed it off, which is how it is usually done, I believe.

You can print out a form from their website and fill it out or you can get a form at the office and you have to bring your driver's license, your marriage certificate, and your old social security card. The website also has a search engine which can give you the nearest social security offices by zip code. Here's the link: Social Security

Re: My Name is Changed--with Social Security

I called the clerks office in Queens( I called the number they gave but one digit up) and they said they got it and processed it but if I hadn't called it would have taken 3 months! She found it a pile that was to be processed in OCT!!!!! She told me two people left in the middle of July and they were totally back-logged. I am so glad I reached her since my DH booked a plane ticket in my new name for the end of OCT. I would have been so screwed!

Re: My Name is Changed--with Social Security

Wow, three months is a long time. I'm glad I went to Manhasset--they were unusually speedy from the sound of it.
