engagement announcements?

I haven't seen a lot of people sending out engagement announcements these days, but my mom really seems to want to send something out. I am a little uncertain about the whole idea of hte announcement thing, but it is not going to kill me.

I thought about maybe doing it along with a STD kinda thing so it isn't so announcement like, but my wedding isnt until 5/07...would it be weird to send a STD this early?

FMIL sent out engagement announcements right after we were engaged (in December). She only sent them to her family. FH and I sent out STDs in May/June.

FMIL really wanted to send announcement so we did - they were very cute. We had photo cards made at Wal-mart for very cheap and they came out awesome! I was really glad I did them because I loved how they turned out.
