Ack! DH's family asked us to host thanksgiving!
So, for the last 30 something years, DH's family has ventured north to binghampton to his aunt's for thanksgiving.Well, aunt donna retired, and moved to South Carolina.
His family likes to go away somewhere so that everyone is kind of forced to spend the whole weekend together.
Well, VA is closer than SC, so we've been asked to host
Now, I knew we were going to take over thanksgiving eventually, but I thought that would be when we had a house, not a 2br apartment in the middle of nowhere!
Did I forget to mention this celebration is for 12 people?
I don't know what to do! I would love to host, but it's our first year of marriage, my first year of teaching, and we have to be on li the weekend before for a wedding that DH is in.
I just don't know if I'll have the time to prepare stuff - plus, i've never cooked a turkey!
help!

Oh it will be fun. I wish I had enough room for our 20+ plus crowd. You will be fine. Buy the pies and the turkey shouldn't be hard to make. Plus it will be an excuse for using your new CHINA!!good luck

Yikes Deb! I had FMIL, her BF and FBIL over for this past Thanksgiving in our little 1BR and I was SO NERVOUS. If you can't get out of it, I wouldn't worry TOO much.I'm really not a cook, but it was easier than I expected. You can have some stuff catered, like the side dishes and dessert, if it is too much too cook for that many people. Just the side and dessert shouldn't be too expensive. The turkey is pretty easy- there are instructions on all of them. If no one will miss the legs and thighs, you can buy turkey breast on the bone and cook several of those. It would be a lot faster, and everyone seems to like just the breast anyway.

thanks everyone, i have a LOT to live up to tho. his aunt made everything from scratch. And i'm in the middle of nowhere, i don't even know anywhere that would cater.
Plus, I was kinda hoping to just go to my dads (about 2 hours from here) and sitting on my butt

It may be a little expensive but maybe do a practice run for all your friends and get some constructive critisism if necessary.

Definitely do a little practice run. Are you getting the recipes from someone in your family? Also I am sure some guests would bring dessert or a side dish. GOOD LUCK!

Why don't you all go to your dad's?
Don't worry, you'll do fine! I had to host DH's family (about 20 or so) for XMas before we were married (in his 'mother's house' - we live in the house DH grew up in!
) and it went fine! Except now we are stuck doing it every year!!!

Re: Ack! DH's family asked us to host thanksgiving!
This will be our 3rd thanksgiving and our 1st as husband and wife. We've had about 16 people each time. It's overwhelming but fun! There is a lot you can do ahead of time and I'm sure someone will be willing to help. Oh and don't let DH get away without doing his fair share! If you need any help or advice don't hesitate to FM me. I feel like a pro now!
ps: We're in a 2 bedroom apartment as well.
