Apartments - when to start looking?

When should I start looking for apartments? I have no idea how long it takes to get a place to live. We are looking for a 2-3 bedroom house or apartment to rent. When is a good time to start?

How long did it take everyone to find a place to live?

Re: Apartments - when to start looking?

I wanted DH to be in the apartment 2 months before the wedding which would have been August. We began looking in the beginning of July because most places won't hold an apartment too long. He moved in Aug 30th so it worked out well.

I guess it also depends on where you're looking too HTH

Re: Apartments - when to start looking?

We wanted to have our apt. a few months early to be able to move everything is leisurely and not feel rushed. Our lease started July 15th and we are still moving stuff in. It is just a matter of how much of the moving in you want to get done before the wedding. I think that starting to look 3-4 months prior to the wedding is reasonable.

Re: Apartments - when to start looking?

I would say it is never to early to start looking. It can never hurt, even if you are not ready you can get an idea what is out there

Re: Apartments - when to start looking?

I agree, and if you are looking in a building or a condo-complex type of place they will have an idea of their coming occupany dates, and you might have to be put on a list.

Either way it is good to know what you are going to get for your money.

Re: Apartments - when to start looking?

It really depends...we found a place really early. We started looking just to see what was out there & fell in love with an apartment so we moved in about 2 months before we wanted to. My friend watned to be in an apartment by May & it took her from Jan till the beginning of June to move in--she found it very frustrating. It really depends if you have a specific price range or what you are looking for it can take awhile.
