Re: Costa Rica or Hawaii for HM
I had the same problem- but I chose Costa Rica b/c you can have an amazing vacation for half the price and plane ride! I have been there before and loved it! I am going the same time as you and I am going for ten days, staying at the Tabacon Resort in Arenal - volcano and hot springs for two nights, Cala Luna in Tamarindo for 4 or five nights- villa with its own pool on the beach, and the Four Seasons for 3 nights plus airfare and a car for under 5 grand for the two of us. To stay in equivalent accomodations in Hawaii would be at least three thousand more dollars. The only thing about CR is the weather- when I went two years ago, it did rain, but I know two couples who went ther this summer who said it barely rained at all.

Re: Costa Rica or Hawaii for HM
Hawaii-THe summer is the rainy season in Costa Rica. We were deciding between the two decided that Hawaii is so expensive and so exotic that its truly a Honeymoon trip.
Costa Rica is a much shorter flight and much cheaper, so we thought that we would go for our first anniversary.
We'll only be able to afford one really big trip, so why not go to the place that seems out of our league.
Also my fiancee is fluent in Spanish which is awesome, but I didn't want to be on our honeymoon with him making friends with every Joe Smoe and me just sitting there having no idea of what's going on.

Re: Costa Rica or Hawaii for HM
We actually have miles -so we do not have to pay for the flight. I think we are leaning towards Hawaii only because it is so far away I feel like we will not be going back anytime soon. Also, it is dreamy :). Costa Rica has always had an appeal to me, but I think it is a place that we may go to in future vacations (like the carribean). What is tempting for CR is that we truly could afford the best, while we would have to find more modest accommodations in Hawaii because it is a lot more $$$.

if you decide to go to Big Island, check Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel, it is a great hotel and in comparison to other hotels on the Kohala coast it is not as expensive...

Re: Costa Rica or Hawaii for HM
We are going to Costa Rica, so I am biased. I would have loved Hawaii, but it is totally out of our budget. We are soo excited for our HM, we are staying at really nice hotels and having all our activities, transportation everywhere, as well as many meals included.Just want to warn you about the frequent flier miles - they are a pain in the a$$ and pretty much impossible to use. We had enough for two coach seats, but every airline we called (US Airways, Continenental, and Delta) told us they didn't have any more seats available. I couldn't believe that on May 30 all those seats were taken. They must reserve 2 seats. I had enough miles to get 1 first class ticket, and had to buy the other ticket. To buy a 1st class ticket was over $1000. Since we would like to sit together on the plane, I wound up using the miles for the first class ticket to get a coach seat and bought the other coach seat. So we used up all our miles for one coach seat and still had to pay over $600 for the other.

Re: Costa Rica or Hawaii for HM
i say costa rica...it's an amazingly beautiful country. hawaii has been done a million times over and it's a longer flight, and everything is more expensive there! but CR is gorgeous, beautiful rain forests and natural parks, and it's not as 'touristy'. i say do something totally different and no matter what, have a great time!

Re: Costa Rica or Hawaii for HM
As far as the frequent miles - I just randomly called and found out that all the seats are going fast. That is why I have to make a decision by this weekend because we have to book by then to use our miles. In fact Hawaii had more flexibility and seats available than costa rica, although there are probably less flights to there. We have had friends go to both places for there HM, and both LOVED it. They both have pros and cons - it is so hard!

I just looked up these places and they look amazing!!!!! What kind of prices did you get? Did you use a travel agent?

We went to Hawaii & LOVED it but it was $$$ & we were also going during huricane season. If you want something with a shorter flight & that's more budget friendly try Costa Rica

Re: Costa Rica or Hawaii for HM
Well we can afford Hawaii, but not the deluxe accommodations - we will have to stay at more moderate hotels :(. It seems like Costa Rica the nicer hotels are a lot less $$$. Although, they do not have all the amenities that Hawaii hotels have. From what I heard in Hawaii that you don't spend much time in the hotel, and this was true when we went to Oahu. However, we would still like to feel like we are on a honeymoon, rather than renting a condo.Welcome New Vendors
