Has anyone bought their gown online? Or having it made?

I was just wondering if anyone had thought about buying their gown online, or had already bought it online? I know there is a big difference in the price. I am also throwing around the thought of having mine made. I'm just scared it would look 'home made'. Please let me know what you gals think. Thanks, Gownless Bride-To-Be

My mother is an expert sewer...she really makes great things (especially quilts) and made my sisters prom dress. She offered to make my wedding dress, but I decided against it. As I talk to people they tell me usually people do not buy the dress that they saw in a magazine (something like 10%). so I thought I couldn't just look at a picture without trying it on and have it made. I'm sure it works out for people, and Im sure my mother would make a great dress, but I want the guarentee that I'll love it. (btw - my sisters prom dress cost more than mine which I bought - the fabric is expensive) If you are considering online, why don't you find a store that has the dress you are looking at and try it on to see if you like it. My cousin bought our bm dresses wholesale and went to a bridal shop to find the one she wanted and then ordered it from the wholesaler.

You should speak to Kathi on this board. She tried her dress on in a store and them bought it online. She said she was very satisfied but speak with her if you want any more info. LIsa

I have been searching for a dress for months. I have been to all the popular stores, at least 6. I found one dress that I considered buying. In the stores I found it ranging anywhere from $1795 -$1995 not including alterations. Then I looked online. I could get the dress online for $1275. I then looked into finding a seamtress. I met with a seamstress who also is a dress maker. After speaking with her I am thinking of getting my dress made. I didn't absolutely love the one dress I found so I figured I could have one made that I do love. I was quoted a price of $1200 - $1400. I think it is easier to buy a dress from one of the regular desingers found in stores. If you are looking to save money buying online is definitely cheaper. Just remember you would need to find a good seamstress.

I think it ended up being a little more than 5K. Which I guess is kind of expensive but worth every cent! The service was incredible and the fabric is beautiful. I think it can be done for less as a lot of it depends on the fabric.

I had my dress for my engagement party made for me by a seamstress.. I used her because she was a friends mom, she made wedding dresses, and I was thinking of having her make my wedding dress, but I figured first I would have her make me a simple dress for my engagement party... yes my dress came out nice.. but I will not have my wedding dress made by a seamstress.. it was a nightmare!! when she called me and told me the day to come and pick up the dress I drove to Queens from NJ, only to get there and find out the dress was not ready, it was still cut up in pieces.. not a stitch sown!!!!!This was one week before my party... I did not know what to do, I was waiting to get the dress so I could buy shoes and a bag.. .. it was a week of back and forth, I had to purchase my accessories without knowing what the dress really looked like on... she had my measurments wrong, and when the dress was done it had to be taken in, while I was there.. because we were out of time, the party was the next day.. in the end the dress was nice, but honestly no nicer than if I went to a few stores and looked for one.. my advise is if you are thinking of using a seamstress to make your wedding dress, have her make you a simple dress first, maybe something for an upcoming event, and see how it goes. Get a feel for her professionalism, and for her delivery and work.. If I went through what I went through for my wedding dress as I did for my engagement dress,I probably would have lost my mind!!! :-)

I bought mine online, since we're having a medieval wedding and I couldn't find the dress I wanted in a bridal shop. It's great!! Well made, great quality. I ordered it a little larger than I needed, figuring it's easier to take it in if it's too big than let it out if it's too small. Got my MOH and flower girl dress from the same store. I was a little nervous about it, but it's been a great experience. I even got the dress within 2 months, which is better than most bridal shops.
