Has this happened to anyone RE: dress sizes?

I know this is petty, but I am typically a size 4-6, and the dress I tried on and was ordered was a size 14!!!! I know it's a corset dress, so it gets tightened in the back, but still - everyone tells me when they got married, their dress was a size 2, etc - and all I can think is - size 14... egads...

Re: Has this happened to anyone RE: dress sizes?

I thought the same thing too. I'm usually a zero and I got a six. Wedding dress sizes are different than real clothes. Everybody has to go up from what they really wear.

I am a size 6. The wedding dress was ordered in a size 10. Forget about anyone who told you their wedding dress was a size two, unless you know for a fact they were a size zero at the time.

Re: Has this happened to anyone RE: dress sizes?

I wear an 8-10. I ordered my dress in a 14. Having been a 24 a while ago, it really didnt matter as long as I wasn't going to have to incur an upcharge for a plus size. My bridesmaid who is a 4 orderd hers in an 8. One was a 16 and ordered a 20. One was an 8 and ordered a 12. You arent alone. Pride falls by the wayside and Id rather have it big and take it in than to order it small and have no room to let the dress out.

Re: Has this happened to anyone RE: dress sizes?

Wedding dress sizes are VERY different from your regular clothes. My FSIL's dress was a 14 and she's a 6. I'm usually a 10 and my dress was also a 14. I think when they tell you it was a smaller size, it's because of the alterations. Don't worry about it!

Re: Has this happened to anyone RE: dress sizes?

phew - thank you - my friend was shocked when I told her the size I had to order, because she is a size 14, and when she saw me in my dress, she said - wow - thats tiny - what size is it? I never even checked - when I asked Carmela (who by the way, is awesome and I love her!!! Carmela's Bridal Garden) she told me the size - I was almost embarassed to say! LOL - thanks for making me feel better!

BTW - I don't think I was EVER a size zero - LOL - maybe when I was 3...

Re: Has this happened to anyone RE: dress sizes?

Yeah well my 2 nieces are BMs and they are rather petite. The sample size was a 10 and they had to order a 4 (which is a ZERO in regular clothes) Mind you, their dresses will STILL be HUGE as they are only 12 and 14 so they will need to be taken in. They made me feel FAT and I am not fat.

Re: Has this happened to anyone RE: dress sizes?

I had to order a 14 also but I'm a 10/12.

I was told once that the reason for the sizing being off is that they still go by size standards of the 40's. The sizes has changed since back then, but the wedding industry never did. They still go by the size charts of 1943 or something, when things were made smaller than they are today.

Remember that even 10 years ago, there was no such thing as a size 0.

Re: Has this happened to anyone RE: dress sizes?

I'm a size 8-10 and they ordered a 16 for me!
The next size up would've been a + size!
You THINK that would've scared me to go to the gym.................

My mom says they do that so you have to get alterations!
I don't know, but I figure it's better they alter it to you anyway, no?

Re: Has this happened to anyone RE: dress sizes?

Yes, when I was a BM, and a size 3 in regular clothes, they ordered me a 12. When I tried on my wedding gown, it was a 12, and it needs minor alterations (bust too big, hips too small) and the lady measured me and told me I was an 8! (i'm now a size 3-7 in jeans, depending on the brand)

Re: Has this happened to anyone RE: dress sizes?

I am usually a 0 if that and they ordered my dress in a size 2. They said it was a new size the company recently added on and it's supposedly very close to my measurements (although they were taken with clothes on as mentioned in another post)..so I'm glad I bought my dress later rather than sooner
I would think they that if you're measurements don't *perfectly* match a size, that they would tend to order a size up so they can take the dress in as opposed to it being to small in one part or something.

I ordered a 16 and they measured for an 18. I was like, don't worry, I'll lose weight.

Bad move?

IF you know you are committed to losing weight, and are actually doing something (working out, or going to WW) then no, it's not a bad move. However, if you have been sort of giving losing weight a half a$$ effort, then yea, bad move. It is much easier to make a dress smaller, but there is very little room to make it bigger.

Re: Has this happened to anyone RE: dress sizes?

i'm normally a zero and they ordered me a 2 - they would've ordered a zero if the dress was made that small.

i can also wear a size 14/16 kids, i like old navy.
