(1010 WINS) (POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.) A Marist College student from Long Island died of bacterial meningitis Wednesday evening, the school said.

Caitlin Boyle, 19, of Babylon, was taken to St. Francis Hospital Monday, said Deborah DiCaprio, Marist's vice president of student affairs.

Meningococcal meningitis is an infection of the fluid around the spinal cord and brain. The bacteria can spread through coughing, kissing and sharing utensils or glasses.

Michael Caldwell, Dutchess County health commissioner, said records showed Boyle received a meningitis vaccination. But he said it doesn't protect against every strain of bacteria.

College spokesman Tim Massie said antibiotics were distributed to those who had close contact with Boyle but are not being given to the general student population because the county Public Health Department has determined doing so is unnecessary. Public Health officials have been working to identify those people who came into close contact with Boyle.

Symptoms include fever, headache, stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, rash and lethargy.

Another female student at Marist died of the disease in 1996. The private college has about 4,800 students.

that's really sad.
I think another college student from Long Island died of the same thing a few weeks ago. And he had also gotten the vaccination..very scary.

My mom is a nurse and was saying thats its really not even that effective against it

How horrible... my sister graduated from Marist... I'll have to tell her about it.

my roommate had it when i was a freshman and she had to be quarinteened (however you spell it).....lol

it was scary because i was so afraid of getting sick!

That is very sad-I heard about it last night.

My friends 3 month old nephew just got out of the hospital with bacterial meningitis and they do not know how he got it or what damage will result. Thank goodness he is alive though.

I am a Marist Alum, this is CRAZY. I remember my senior year in HS when we heard of their first case of meningitis. How horrible? SO young.......So unfair

I am a Marist Alum and I just heard about it... It is so sad... I think I was a senior when it happened to the last student..

so sad- My mom got it when she was on chemo- she was in a coma for 2 weeks - so how she lived- but she was never the same
