Whats the deal with a grooms cake?

When do you have one? It is at the RD, or reception?
Also, those of you who did it, was it worth it?

TIA

Re: Whats the deal with a grooms cake?

Good questions. I want to know too - from what I've read, it kinda seems like a waste of $ to me...but would love some insight.

Re: Whats the deal with a grooms cake?

It's more of a southern tradition, but typically it's done at the reception. I totally agree that it's a waste of money, but I'm doing it anyway. I felt like so many of the major wedding decisions were mine (even though I gave my FH plenty of opportunity to have input! ). I wanted him to have something that really reflected his interests. Since a Red Sox themed wedding was out-of-the-question, I decided to do the Red Sox grooms cake. (FH is from Boston....it's not his fault that he's a Red Sox fan )

Re: Whats the deal with a grooms cake?

I didn't do one, but I think a lot of people who have a groom's cake have one at the rehearsal dinner.

Re: Whats the deal with a grooms cake?

I think I want to do it because weddings are focused so much on the bride that I thought it would be a nice surprise to FH to incorporate something only about him. I know it's extra money but I love surprises and I think it'll be worth it.

Re: Whats the deal with a grooms cake?

The 2 I've seen were actually at the reception. They were put on the table with the other desserts and slices of cake for everyone to see.

I've heard that people use it at the RD too, which seems like a nice idea since the cakes are usually smaller and have a very personal meaning.

Do you order them from an outside vendor?

One of my co-workers did this at his wedding!! He got married in Texas where his wife is from - it was such a beautiful wedding. I'm not doing one b/c of the $$ and I know FH cares more about that than his own cake. (he SO cheap! It's actually funny!)

This is the exact reason I'm doing it. Although I haven't quite decided if I'm having it at the rehearsal dinner or at the reception.
