Almost cried at the gym today..

I love Step Aerobics but I had never done it at a REAL gym before so I decided to go to the class this morning. Before it started the instructor asked if it was anyone's first time and I raised my hand. She told me I would get used to her cues easily.

I was so intimidated because all these people had been coming for months and they knew all the segments. It was like doing a long dance routine without instruction. I ended up standing there watching them.

Some girl felt bad for me and when I left she told me not to give up because it takes time to get used to the instructor. She had no idea how badly I needed someone to say that to me.

Anyway, just venting!

Re: Almost cried at the gym today..

Don't give up!

Whenever I join a new class I talk to the instructor and then I go to the back of the class.
It is easier for me if I can watch other people and I feel like I am out of their way.
Everyone was the new person in class at some point, so don't worry about messing up.
Good luck!

Re: Almost cried at the gym today..

Ugh...that's happened to me before. It's totally discouraging too, but don't give up. Some of the steps get familiar quick. You'll be able to pick it up after a couple of classes. It's a PIA in the meantime, but once you get it you'll feel so much better.

Re: Almost cried at the gym today..

That's what happened to me too! There were actually 3 of us who were new to the class so we were all just standing there watching - I felt so silly. All the steps have names and if you didn't know them, then you were lost. I haven't taken a step class since

Funny thing was I was in the back of the class but with all the mirrors and the fact that my step was so close to other people, I felt like I was still in the way and very visible!

Thanks for all the encouragement!

Re: Almost cried at the gym today..

Step can be REALLY hard depending on the instructor - I used to be a fitness instructor, but just couldn't teach step (I can take any step class fine, but teaching is very difficult)

When you walk into a step class, you don't know what kind of instructor you are going to get - you could get the basic stepper who goes up and down a lot and uses very simple choreography to Paula Abdul busting it up on a step (or soemtimes 2 if you take double step)

Some steps you will get, some take years and years to understand - and if you are a beginner - its not worth the twisted ankle!

If it's NYSC, call Gail Maerz and ask who may be more basic at your club (she herself is basic if she is teaching at your club)

If it's not NYSC, just ask your manager/regional manager. I used to work for NYSC and Bally's - I may still know some of the instructors if you are curious who may be good for you...

For example in NYSC - both Angelo and Erin teach very dancey and complicated step. So does Laurie...

Good luck!!!

Don't feel bad. Step does take a while to get used to. Once you get the hang of it, you'll feel like a pro!

Re: Almost cried at the gym today..

I used to do STEP--a lot (now, I am a bum ). That was before there were really any double step classes.

Anyway, I was really good at that time but anytime I went to an instructor I didn't know, I had to learn all new lingo and I looked like a fool!!

Do the gyms still offer a decent selection of step classes?? The schedules used to be mostly step classes but I would think there are less of them now (with Pilates and Kickboxing and who knows what else being more popular).

I live in Commack and want to start working out again but I do not know what options I have besides NYSC, which gave me a very high quote for membership.

Re: Almost cried at the gym today..

It's not Erin - it's Michelle - I don't know her - but I do know weekend classes are insane at NYSC, and they have to be challenging and hard core for that crowd (I used to teach Sunday morning kickbox...)

Re: Almost cried at the gym today..

She said something about 'We've been doing these steps since September' so I'm hoping when they announce winter classes (since we're on a fall schedule now) it will restart or start somewhat from the beginning again. Am I wrong?
