another etiquette question

hi girls. i posted the other day asking what to do about a baby shower gift. however, i just found out from fi that it's a christening! they are having it at some reception hall. to me, that's a foreign concept b/c christenings with my family/friends is always a small, intimate celebration with only the closest of family/friends. (to recap the invite came from my fi's employee who has only been with the company for about a month!)

anyhow, i'm wondering if same advice of getting them something small is still relevant? it doesn't look like they are registered anywhere. since it's a christening and not a shower, is it appropriate to give baby gift type stuff, or are we better off doing a $25 savings bond?

p.s. now i really feel like we were invited simply for the gift!
