NWR: James Frey admits to lying - watch today's Oprah

I know this was a topic on there before.. but i just saw this article on Yahoo and thought some of you might be interested.

Apparently he's on today's Oprah admitting to making most of the book up.

I read the book and it was excellent and I'm a bit sad he lied about so many things.

I was in the middle of reading the book when the controversy was uncovered. I have to say, it ruined the experience for me. When I first started reading it, I couldn't believe the crap this guy went through. Then, come to find 1/2 way through it that he made a lot of it up, just ruined it for me. One thing though, I'm just shocked that Oprah's producers didn't do more research. They're usually pretty good about that stuff.

my opinion: I enjoyed the book immensely and don't really care that he altered the story.

I agree. Furthermore, a statement was already made stating that yes, he did EMBELLISH parts of the book - but it's less than 20%

I just started the book so I definitely dont want to know that it was made up!! But since I Tivo Oprah daily, I'll have to check some of it out.

I dont know if any of you are watching Oprah now but I'm so upset-I told everyone about how wonderful this book was! And I read the follow up book My Friend Leonard-I wonder if any of that was fabricated. I'm still shocked!

I am upset that he lied but I still love the book. I don't think he should have said it was a memoir but it is compelling, I could not put it down.

Same here. I was reading it for a class assignment when the whole controversy erupted. I have to say that I still ended up enjoying the book. Regardless of the facts, I think there is a lot of truth to the way he described the struggles of someone suffering from addiction.

He wrote the book A Million Little Pieces about his drug addiction and what it led him to do etc... Oprah has been bragging about his book for a while now and urging people to read it- and now she is upset because she endorsed the book and parts of it were made up or at least exaggerated. I saw him on her show last time when he was promoting his book and I didn't like him on the show and so I didn't buy the book- I was about to the week before but after seeing him did not and now I am glad I didnt.

I'm curious to read it, but after watching Oprah and reading about the controversy, I'm more curious. BUT I don't want to go out now and buy the book because I don't feel he deserves to have my $$ in his pocket.

I am with you! Even if he went through 10% of the stuff in the book...he had a tough life. Plus I love his style of writing...the books go so quickly. I liked My Friend Leonard even more that Million Little Pieces.

give me a break...that's what the library is for! Again- regardless of the Oprah hype, it is a fantastic book. He is a great writer. Somehow I dont think the money was his motivation!

I have to say, i don't really care if he fabricated and made stuff up. His point still came across, and it was absolutely one of the best books I have ever read. Even if it was on the fiction shelf, I would have said the same thing. And I admire him even more for owning up to everything today on Oprah.

I agree 110%. I was SO upset with Oprah today. To be honest, I got VERY frustrated with her. There was NO need to do what she did to him today. Just because she was embarassed of the support she gave him she did this whole show to berate him and make him look stupid. I in NO way am offended, pissed, sad, or hurt, because he embellished some things. Someone made a point on an AOL board... it was a MEMOIR, NOT an autobiography. If he wants to remember things a certain way, he's entitled to it. If Oprah felt 'duped' and used, didn't she do the same by blowing this WAY out of proportion to boost her ratings?

I read the book when it first hit book shelves and I in no way think that I've been lied to or cheated. I didn't like how she spoke for 'millions of people' out there that he let down and lied to. How about the MILLIONS of people that still support and enjoyed his writings? How about the millions that read his book for what it was worth and got help and survived their own hard times?

I thought both of his books were beautifully written with such raw emotion and conviction. I hope he knows that there are a lot of people out there who don't care whether or not he fabricated some details.
