NWR: JUST HEARD AN EXPLOSION - UPDATE AT BOTTOM

I was just on the phone with my dad and fh was on the phone in another room. All of a sudden I heard something that sounded like an explosion. It was in the distance but definitely BIG...Not kidding - I thought I felt my building shake! Then FH told me he heard it and felt it too! Now there are Sirens!!! We live in the Bayside/Auburndale area of Queens. I hope everything is okay!

It was in the village, must have been a loud one

salt corroded wires underground and caused an explosion. people are without power but i don't think there are any injuries.

i thought it happened in the west village though--maybe it's 2 different things?

You are right, I definitely doubt it is the same thing - It wasn't THAT far in the distance.
Things do seem calm now though.

Just heard on the news it was a man hole cover explosion 4 blocks from my house No one got hurt - THANK GOD!

My FI works for the press and this is all he found on explosion today,

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (AP) — A meth lab in the basement of a home
exploded Tuesday, leaving a man dead, city police said.
Joshua Lamberg, 28, was found in a bedroom of the basement after a
fire at 2:10 p.m. in the one-story home. He was pronounced dead at the
hospital.
“The door to the room was shut and the fire had no place to go,”
Assistant Fire Chief Larry Ostanek said. “It eventually burned
completely through the door. We had the fire out in a matter of
minutes after we found the source.”
April Tambeau, 25, who lives on the first floor, was treated at the
scene.
Detective Joseph Cornell said Lamberg had been staying at the home
for only two weeks.
Authorities were planning to remove any hazardous materials from
the area on Wednesday.

Did you find out what it was? We live in Auburndale too. I was passed out by then and did not here anything.

It happened on 167th street and Northern Blvd (which is actually Flushing). Again nobody got hurt, it was due to the salt and melting snow erroding the wires, which caused the explosion.
