Need help from Chinese Brides.....

Hi Girls!! It's only been the 4th day after my engagement and I'm already feeling the tension about planning the wedding. We just started looking at reception halls and we already ran into a big big problem.
This is why I need the help of Chinese brides out there:
FH's parents prefer to have Authentic Chinese food served at the reception. I personally don't care what type of food they serve: They could serve Italian, Indian, German, or Ethiopian food. My problem is, the only way for us to have Authentic Chinese food served, that means, I need to have my wedding reception in a Chinese restaurant in Queens. I really prefer not to have it there. Did any Chinese brides out there that ran into these problems?? Am I the only one

HELP!!!

Re: Need help from Chinese Brides.....

I am not Chinese, but I have a suggestion. What about a location that allows you to bring in your own catering. Some hotels allow it. That way you can make your parents happy with the menu, but still have your reception at a place that you like.

Hope you don't mind my intrusion.

P.S. my FH is Chinese - does that count?

I have thought about it, but it just seems like it might cost more money!!!
You didn't have the same problem?? WHY ME
Thanks for your advice though, this is definitely something I have to look into. I actually found a place in Flushing - Shareton Hotel that does have the food that FH's family wants.

Sorry. I thought I was giving you some great idea.

In answer to your question. No, I did not have the same problem. I am not Asian, so his family probably would not insist that the entire menu be Chinese when only half of the family will be Chinese.

Re: Need help from Chinese Brides.....

How about a chinese banquet rehearsal dinner? That's what we're doing.

The Sheraton in Flushing is definitely very pretty, I think there's also another nice newer restaurant across from Flushing Mall... don't remember the name.

Or like Brod suggested, get chinese food catered.

Good luck!

Re: Need help from Chinese Brides.....

I would ask the reception vendors if they know a place that serves aurthenic chinese food. You might be surprise where they come up with. Orental food is becoming very popular now a days. You might find a reception willing to work with you, espeically if you stress that its a requirement for your wedding. You could even convince a place to let you have your own catering if they don't offer Chineses. Try to relax. Congradulations on your engagement. Don't stress yourself out. Take care and good luck.

It's not on Main Street, I think 39th Ave? Maybe it's called Ocean Jewel Seafood restaurant? Something like that... I don't go to Flushing too often.

We are hoping to have a Chinese banquet rehearsal dinner as well - any other suggestions? What do you think about East on Queens Boulevard?

Re: Need help from Chinese Brides.....

FH is chinese we are having the traditional chinese wedding (tea ceremony, food etc.) as the rehersal dinner which will probably be the thur before the wedding or a fri or sat the week before bc we are having a lot of guests flying in from hong kong. We are having the main reception at the watermill. We go to flushing often and east is nice and they have a dance floor i think? If your really want to have a wedding in a catering hall and please your parents I would try and make the rehersal dinner the way your parents want and the actual wedding the way you want it!

Is that East Manor in Elmhurst? Never been there, but my FILs went there for a wedding... they said it was very nice, they liked it better than the East Manor in Flushing.

We're having our rehearsal dinner in Chinatown, it's a smaller restaurant on Bowery where the FILs have all their birthdays and other celebrations... I don't know the name either!

I'm actually getting married at East Manor in Elmhurst...love the space since it used to be an American catering hall and they kept the same decor upstairs. Best of both worlds and made my parents and fils very excited that i was having a chinese banquet.

My suggestion would be to look into getting the meals catered at a hotel or venue of your choice. Or do something pan-asian fusion where there's a mix of chinese food in with other kinds of foods.

If that isn't an option, you should also check out Linden Place in Flushing. I've never been there, but I've heard a lot of raves about the food, decor, and service.

Re: Need help from Chinese Brides.....

been to Linden Place. Very nice inside. Kinda decorated like Rome. The dim-sum is pretty good. I've heard their wedding offer either american or chinese food. And the american food was not that good. Still, i'm looking forward to going there for my friend's wedding there soon!

Re: Need help from Chinese Brides.....

My FH is chinese (I am not) and we are not having a traditional chinese wedding because I know my famiy and friends will not eat. We are doing the tea ceremony right before our wedding ceremony. Sheraton is very nice, and my FBIL got married at East in Flushing, the food was very good. I would do a rehearsal dinner, that may be easier.

Re: Need help from Chinese Brides.....

My FH is chinese and we ran into the same problem. His parent own a big catering hall in Queens and wanted us to have the wedding there because it would be cheaper for us and of course, they like the place. However, I dont like the place at all and would be so unhappy having it there. Plus, my parents are paying for our reception. His parents, like the above post, are going to do the rehearsal dinner, and that will probably be at a chinese place. Do a small thing in the ceremony that will honor his culture, im sure they would appreciate that!

Re: Need help from Chinese Brides.....

Hi

I am having my wedding at the Sheraton in Queens Flushing. I was having the same problem. My family prefered chinese food. Sheraton can cater chinese dishes like the typical 10 course meal. I looked at all the East restaurants (but I was not having 40 tables). If you do not have a certain number of tables they expect you to share the room. (ex. East Manor in Elmhurst). If you are having a large wedding then go with any of the East. I am only expecting 25 tables so I went with the Sheraton. I definitely would have to share the room. I like the fact we are not sharing the room, we can have our wedding ceremony on site and there are the typical chinese dishes.
Good luck looking
