Re: NWR: Corned beef and cabbage vs Friday in Lent!!
my brother told me that the Catholic Church said we can have corned beef on Friday, and just not eat meat on Saturday.I'm not a corned beef fan, so I'll just have my 'Lent Sushi' on Friday, and have meat at the party I'm going to on Saturday.

We have a dispensation for when St. Patrick's Day falls on a Friday.....and my RD is this Friday and one of the menu options is corned beef!

Since Friday is St. Patrick's Day the RC Church allows you to eat meat in his honor and celebration. It's kind of a 'freebie' this week!!

Yep, the church gives you official dispensation.I'm not a huge meat eater and I love lots of non-meat foods but, it seems that I always want to have meat on Friday's during lent just because you aren't supposed to!

I don't like corned beef. I'm having soup and grilled cheese or cheese ravioli's.

Re: NWR: Corned beef and cabbage vs Friday in Lent!!
I have been trying to find information about the dispensation and haven't been able to. Each diocese is responsible for giving the dispensation. Back in 2000, the last time St. Pat's fell on a Friday, the archdiocese of NY gave the dispensation, but the archdiocese of Rockville Centre did not. Has anyone found anything 'official'???

Re: NWR: Corned beef and cabbage vs Friday in Lent!!
FYI: Corned beef and cabbage is NOT an Irish dish. People in Ireland think it's a hilarious we eat here like it's going out of style on St. Pat's.... because they don't eat it. The first time my parents (who are from Ireland) had corned beef and cabbage was their first St. Patrick's Day in America. If you want to eat the beef and have something authnetically Irish, eat sheperd's pie or stew.... they actually eat that there! ;)

The dispensation is for all meat, not just corned beef.

What I'm really dying for is a full Irish Breakfast. This restaurant just opened by me and apparently they serve it. I may have to check it out since I'm off on Friday.

Re: NWR: Corned beef and cabbage vs Friday in Lent!!
The pope grants special dispensation to eat corned beef on the feast of ST Patrick if it happens to fall on a Friday. I never heard about the Saturday thing. Meat is a luxury during lent so thats why we don't eat it on Fridays. It used to be for the full 40 days but they knocked it down to Ash Wed and Fridays. Don't stress over it, youw on't go to hell.
