NWR- City trip

I need some tips guys. My son has requested that I take him to NYC for his birthday - which w/my luck lands on Memorial Day weekend again. Anyway I have taken him before but we never went and did the 'tourist' thing before.
He wants to do the Empire State Building and see the Statue of Liberty. What is the best day to go? I am considering on taking him out of school on his actual birthday (May 22). Are these places open then?
plus any other idea on where to take him? He's done FAO Schwartz and I don't want to repeat that. I was thinking of taking him to the museum instead.
Think I will have time for all that in 1 day? and will these places be open on a monday?

Re: NWR- City trip

The empire state building and the statue should take a big part of the day considering getting around town.

Lunch at Mars 2112-even though the food is mediocre the atmosphere is fun. Also he may like the Hard Rock cafe. How old is he?

The museum of natural history-so he can see the dinosaurs and/or the planetarium.

Does he like baseball? How about taking him to a Yankee game after if they are playing at home?

Re: NWR- City trip

He's going to be 8. I think I may break this trip up. I want him to see the 2 things he wants but I know a whole day is going to be to fast for him. The museum itself is a day alone. And like every typical boy he is a dinasour freak! So maybe I will do it in 2 days - just split it up a bit. Where's this restaurant you mentioned?
And yes he LOVES the yankees. My FBIL might be able to get tickets to a game for him or something.
Thanks!

Re: NWR- City trip

well good morning Dayna!! I don't know....there really is so much to do and I want to make sure he sees the 2 things he wants. I was planning on throwing the MONH in there as a second day trip - do you think the kids ( I am going to ask my girlfriend if she wants to take her 2) will like the planetarium better than the museum?

Re: NWR- City trip

Good Morning Laura..
I am a HUGE fan of the museum.. I am enraptured by all the history and beauty of it all.. So I would be inclined to say the museum.. BUT.. it would be an all day affair and walking around is pretty tiring, esp for boys who have attention spans of ants!!! Try this link of things to do in the city.. just click on New York and go from there.. HTH

PS.. I posted the STD pictures!!

awesome thanks! I almost think he is more thrilled to go on the train! I remember when he was 3 and I took him there and he was so excited! He told me that I can't drive into the city I have to take the train. Fine by me - takes forever to get there from here driving!

Re: NWR- City trip

No seriously picture this:
I am dressed in my sexies outfit thrilled to be going on a date. Steve pushed and pushed and pushed until I couldn't say no any longer about going out with him. So here I am excited to go out w/ a guy I had a crush on since I was 14 and my sister and all of her friends are over my house. He picks me up and drives to the local diner -***? Then to make matters even WORSE he took me to 7-11 and we hung out in the truck for hours.
I was 26!!! not 18!

Thankfully I am forgiving and I gave him another shot.
Still haven't had a great date EVER w/him! Isn't that terrible?

Re: NWR- City trip

I'd say take him to the 2 things he wants to see, then head over to Mars. We have son's that are both turning 8 in May( Lucas turns 8 May 9th). I also took Lucas to Mars to eat. The waiters and waitresses are dressed as the coolest aliens, Lucas loved it, and so did I. That would be a fun filled day. Trust me, we did it!!!!

Re: NWR- City trip

Statue of LIberty is great... but you have to get there early... like be on that line at 8AM, so you can get on an early ferry and do it quick.

Empire State is great too, but again the earlier the better, otherwise you wait in line... i love it at night... and don't bother going if it's not a clear day, ruins the view.

I taught in the city and the kids always loved my field trips to the Children's Museum on the Upper West Side and the Central Park Zoo... not as big and intimidating as the Bronx Zoo. the bronx zoo is great, but you really need the whole day for that!

GOOD LUCK!
