NWR: Wisdom Teeth

I've been putting off getting my wisdom teeth for the past 6 years.

Whenever I meet with an oral surgeon and he tells me the risk factors, I get scared.

Please share your wisdom teeth experiences.

Not so bad or terrible?

My two bottom ones are impacted and it does hurt. MY dentist says though if theyre not infected to leave them in.

i had each one taken out at a different time, over the span of 6 years, because each tooth was comming in at its own pace. Each time I had local anastetic, the procedure went smoothly, and I was sore for a few days. I only had on dry socket in 4 procedures, and they gave me some antibiotics to help heal it. Over all it was not so bad.

Honestly, for me, it was totally not as bad as i expected it to be. I had all 4 pulled at once, and they gave me vicodin, so i was fine. I actually only need the meds for the first day or two, then I just took advil. On the plus side, you can't eat much at first, so I ended up losing weight

I had a wonderful oral sergeon. I chose to get all 4 done at once because of the stories I've heard, I knew I wouldn't go back.

It took about 4 minutes to extract all 4 teeth, but it only felt like 2 minutes. I woke up with cotton in my mouth and a little blood (hope I'm not getting to graphic). I was given pain medication, which I didn't even need. No swelling, no bruising - my experience was great!

All mine are out. Removed the bottom ones. One at a time. Going soon for top ones. I like doing one at a time because I can still eat!!!!

My wisdom teeth were so impacted they actually were laying on there sides. The bottom ones had tried to come up but couldn't, so I had to have surgical pulls where they open up the gums and get them SORRY

I went to the oral surgeon was given Iv Sedation, and fell to sleep to awake to them gone, I had 2 pulled at each sitting. Was given Demarol since I can't take Tylenol w/codeine, or darvocet or vicodin.

Get the Iv Sedatiion You'll feel nothing and wake up not knowing what happened that is the easiest way.

My dentist was concerned with the fact that the nerves in my gums were starting to grow towards/ into the roots of my teeth. so he was afraid that i would have nerve damage (no feeling in my tongue, chin, lower jaw area, etc).

So I definitely didn't want that!! So no matter what I had to get them out. Plus, they were starting to push my other teeth (after I had braces my teeth were perfect) but then the wisdom teeth were making the others shift. so to stop this i needed them out. they were not infected or anything like that, YET, but he said sometimes it happens very suddenly and if i wait to see if that will happen and then they HAVE to come out-- the risks are greater the longer i wait of the nerve damage and not to mention my teeth shifting more.

so i had them taken out. it was tuff, i'm not going to lie BUT i do hear that i was one of the worst cases he had ever seen-- all four were impacted not only beneath gum but some were beneath my bone plate... so he had to saw through my bone to get them out. plus, i had dry sockets after so it took forever to heal and it was very painful for me. the pain meds that they gave me (RX) wouldn't work!! the surgery itself was the easiest part-- i went to sleep and woke up in what seemed like five minutes-- really, it was almost 2 hours.

my doctor was good to me, he gave me anything and everything to help with the pain, saw me everyday to change my dressings (that helped me heal) and he was very pleasant to deal with. but it was quite an odyssey i'm not going to lie-- BUT on the other hand, out of twenty years the dentist told me i was the worst by far in terms of healing-- my cousin had it done right before me, my sister had it done just recently and they were FINE like 2 days later-- it took me almost 4 weeks to be able to eat real food again!!!!!!! was it great for my figure? YES but it was hard, very hard.

but worth it-- no nerve damage, they are gone and i dont have to worry about it now and i'm getting invisalign for my teeth to get them back to perfect and then i dont have to worry about them shifting again... but everyone's situation is different. if your dentist tells you you need them out-- ask why and make up your mind on how important the reasons seem-- but dont worry, even with my terrible experience-- it was worth it and now it is all over... i also had all four done at once b/c he told me, based on the sawing and the impacted that it was going to be a tuff recovery, so he said if i didn't do all at once-- he would never see me again hahaha

so HTH and i don't mean to scare you at all, i just wanted to be honest-- but like i said, in the end: totally worth it!!!

I had ALL FOUR removed. I was terrified!!!!! Honestly, I had them knock me out and everything was fine. I don't remember a thing! Afterwards there was a little pain the day of, but other than that it was not anywhere near as bad as I thought it would be.

I did get sick from the pain medication they gave me though. That was the worst part.

I got all four out at once. Ot hurt the next couple of days, I took some vicodin and that was that. It sucked but I would def do all 4 at once. It's over and done before you realize and your fine in like 3 days. All I had was some swelling.

same thing for me. I had so many dentists tell me I didnt need them out but they wind up overcrowding your mouth and shifting teeth and you dont need them. I went to sleep and woke up and they were out and it was not a bad expereince at all. I was better in a few days.

I did all four at once, like a month ago, even thought the bottom 2 didn't really need it. I was so scared-my 1st time being knocked out, which was actually pretty fun - but I knew I was only doing this once. They say you can go to work the next day, but I wouldn't recomend it, I did it Thursday night & took off on Friday. It did hurt for a couple of days but all & all wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Although I couldn't imagine being awake for it - I can't believe they even give you that choice - That should be illegal.

i had all 4 taken out 2 were impacted.. It wasn;t that bad of an experience, the first day stinks but the end result is so much better, you dont have to worry about cavities back there & teeth shifting.
i would classify it was terrible at all b/c then i wouldn't have went back to the 2nd time for the other side of my mouth...if you're gonna do all 4 then do each side about 2-3 wks. apart...I didn;t need all 4 out but figured just do it now then have problems later..

I've had all but 4 of my regular teeth pulled out when I was younger, and had braces. All four of my wisdom teeth were impacted, I had 2 taken out at a time because my oral surgeon was an idiot and refused to take them out at the same time. Then, to add more to me being pissed off, I woke up towards the end when she was putting the stitches in bc she didn't give me enough of whatever makes you sleep during it. Just don't go to a woman in Patchogue...she was horrible.

Make sure to get them taken out at the same time!! You'll be glad you don't have to go through pain twice. The pain is more like soreness, but is different for everyone.

My brother was out with his friends 3 hours later, whereas I had slight bruising on my cheeks. Just make sure to get put out!!

I just happen to have a bad story, but other's that i've talked to, it was no big deal. Just depends on your pain threshold.

I had one impacted tooth at age 13. Considering I did not want to go through the procedure again, I had him take out all four at once to prevent future problems. Considering I have a high painthreshold, this was nothing for me. After local anesthesia I remember nothing...just waking up. There was mild bruising and swelling for a few days, but nothing major. Good Luck to you. You'll be fine.

I had 4 impacted. I had the first 2 taken out by a dentist. Big mistake. I was awake during the whole thing and my face swelled like a balloon. The 2nd 2 were taken out by an oral surgeon on 111. He works in Dr. Stein's office but for some reason I can't remember his name. He looks like Noah Wyle though. He did an awesome job. Put me under with laughing gas, woke up, no pain or swelling. It's not bad if you go to the right place.

Not bad at all. The first day was yucky and I was throwing up a lot, but after that I was fine. I think the key was I iced my face afterwards.

well mine were impacted and they put me under to surgically remove them, but for some reason they were slowly getting me off what was making me sleep and i woke up in the middle of the last tooth being pulled. It didn't hurt but i was freaking out a little. It was worth doing htough.

I agree...I got sick from the vicodin but other than that it wasn't really too bad.

My sis and I used Dr Stein- he was really great!! Yeah that office does a great job and he was highly recommended because I was nervous about being put under
