what is the purpose of hand cancelling invites...?
My FH and I are watching my bros house while he's away. We mailed our invites yesterday. He got the invite today. (which is good)BUT, it came all ugly and dirty. Isn't hand cancelling supposed to prevent that from happening?
FH said it looks ike it was ran over.

In my opinion? I don't really see a purpose... but that's just me.I guess the theory is that it's supposed to make the envelopes look nicer, but they're still going to be sorted and tossed in a truck and carried and shoved in your mailbox and whatever, so I don't see how big of a difference it will make.

I had them hand cancelled because everyone said to do so, but my FH uncle who works for the post office said it really doesn't matter. They still have to go throught TONS of sorting. I had them hand cancelled more for my own piece of mind. A few last minute ones I just threw in the mail and they got there just fine!

Re: what is the purpose of hand cancelling invites...?
yup- hand cancelling only prevents them from going through one machine... they still have to go through all the sorting machines to get where they need to go, so there is still a good chance of them getting dirty or whatever... thats probably what happened to yours......

i totally agree!!! i see a lot of posts on here of people complaining that it took too long at the post office to hand cancel, or that the post office wouldn't let them do it themselves or whatever... but to me, its not worth stressing about, becaue they still have to go through all sorts of machines to get where they need to go, not to mention the mailmans bag and truck....
ETA: i think theres some things with the wedding that we just have to give up control over....

i agree also... that is why someone invented the outer envelope... it protects the inner one and it is ok if it gets dirty!

I was trying to explain the inner envelope's purpose to FH the other day. That's a good way to put it (I got him all confused - and it's not like he hasn't received more wedding invites than I have).
Not sure if I'm going to hand-cancel or not, I heard it's more relevant if your invitation is delicate (bows and whatnot). Mine is very simple.

Re: what is the purpose of hand cancelling invites...?
thanks for clearing that up. Everyone on here was talking about it, so I had FH go to the post office, and now I know it didn't really matter. My invite was a pocketfold, so there was no inner envelope.
