Re: nwr-cats

I would not get rid of my cat. I will keep the cat away from baby, but I would never even consider getting rid of her. When you are pregnant you can't change the cat litter, something w/ the feces, so make your hubby do it

Re: nwr-cats

no need to get rid of the cats. i've heard those cat warnings too and really, just watch the cats by the baby and have your husband change the litter just to be safe... although my mom continued to change the litter pan through 4 pregnancies and we seem to all be fine

I would never get rid of my cats. Just make sure they are not in the baby's room when they are sleeping.

No need to get rid of them. I had a cat when my daughter was born and never had a problem, now I have three cats and would never think of getting rid of them. As long as you watch the baby with the cat things will be fine

Re: nwr-cats

it has to do with the feces. it carries a disease that can affect pregnant women. you just can't change their litterboxes.

Re: nwr-cats

I was a Vet Tech for 13 years before I became an RTT.

Toxoplasmosis is what is in feces. In my 13 years we only came across one case. If anyone feels that scooping poop or changing the litter is too much- then just have DH do it!

An old wives tale was that the cats would sit on a childs face and smother it. Not true. Then it was bc babies smelled like milk they would get into the crib to be with the child and smother the child that way. Also, not true.

I know many, many people who have a multi cat household and nothing of that nature ever happened.

I also have a very close friend of mine who has 6 cats. So what she did was buy a screen door and put it up in the babies room. This way she could see and hear the baby and the cats didn' t
get in.

Good luck with the kitties! I love kitties! That's my Jiffy cat pic to the left!

Re: nwr-cats

Pregnant women just can't empty or change the litterboxes. Cats are usually good with children, no worries.

Re: nwr-cats

I am a fond person of cats BUT I would not get rid of them because of children.

I think as long as the cats are out of the baby's room and not left inattended with children, it should be fine.

The rest is hygiene. I got 2 pupppies. They are not the 'cleanest' yet. We wash our hands after handling them, etc....

ETA: the stories about cats 'sucking baby's breath away', seating on their face, etc.. is really an old wife tale. You just dont' leave children and pets together unattended. Just like you would not let you baby sleep with you (and suffocate if one of the parents rolls over on the child).

Re: nwr-cats

I think that the whole 'get rid of the cat' idea is from when our parents were raising children. I believe it is a myth. I was watching animal planet one day and they said that as long as you get the cat ready for the idea of a child then there should be no problems. Don't neglect them..they need love too

Re: nwr-cats

This is to aswer the second part of your question. 40 is not too old to have a child. My grandmother had child number 9 at age 44 and child number 10 at age 46. She's 86 now and has a lot of energy and a ton of grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great great granddaghter.
