i agree with you about the chinese banquets kewlpuff.
I heard it's hard to find a good chinese restaurant that will provide good food and great service at the same time.
Most of the chinese banquet weddings I've been to in Chinatown or Flushing are decently priced at 50-60 per head, but service is really nonexistent!
They pretty much just screen you off from other restaurant guests so you really dont get much privacy and the wait staff aren't experienced. You can also hear the music from the other weddings if they hold two weddings at a time.
They also tend to do things like take away your food if you're on the dance floor or plopping the food down in front of your face so they can move on to the next course. Then they rush rush you outta there 'cus they wanna get outta there at 11pm! :P
That's why I didnt even think about having a chinese banquets even though I do love the food.
I heard there's a hotel in Flushing that actually will do chinese weddings and give you a good level of service 'cus the staff is not american but they allow chinese food to be catered. If you want I can help you find out. I think the hotel starts with H. Hilton perhaps?
I know the Hilton out in Long Island did this for my Indian friend. She had indian food and it was fantastic, service was also great!
Maybe you are talking about Sheraton Hotel?

 actually, now that you mention it, the waiters do plop the food in front of you and try to shoo you out asap! it's hard to run a good chinese restaurant in NY because in order to cook good chinese food, you need good ingredients and a very very skilled chef which = $$$$.
in order to run a good business, you need good administration skills and a properly trained manager in the food/hotel business or something with years of experience.
the majority of Chinese restaurants in NY are run by immigrants who really can't afford any of the above. and even if they could, they are already making tax free cash off of customers who either don't know the difference, have never had better or will settle for the quality at the price. why give up the cash? there really is no incentive to...
ABC's who grow up in NY probably don't want to reinvest their money, education and time in the food business or the community and prefer going into something more "professional" like accounting, healthcare, law etc...  *ur typical ABC here* 
then you have the worst problem of land and location. there really is no good location for a good chinese restaurant to establish itself. if it's in the city, it's too far from the brooklyn and flushing community. if it's in flushing, rent is crazy expensive and you've got tons of competitors who are already way ahead of you there. if you put one in long island, you can't reach the NYC folks. with all these things going against you, a chinese restaurant would be insane to try and set up a posh, high quality restaurant/banquet hall.
out of the ~30 yrs now of being in the city, i'd say all chinese restaurants tend to start out really great, after 2-3 years, the food starts getting bad, after 1-2 years, the service and wait staff starts declining in quality and then averaging another 3-5 years later, the restaurant shuts down, changes name or changes owner and then the cycle begins again.  so much for attention to quality!

Linden Place is very, very FLASHY looking. I mean it's pretty but I guess it's not for me. Everything in their main hall is decorated with Gold trim and red fabric. I just feel it makes me feel "suffocated". I hope that make sense!!!

We had our rehearsal dinner at Tang Pavilion in Manhattan. It's $40pp, Shanghainese style food. It's very elegant, with an entrance designed by I.M. Pei, and the service is impeccable. So if you don't mind it being in Manhattan I'd highly recommend it.

Hi, I just got engaged couple weeks ago. I am glad to find this thread. Frankly, I never like Chinese style wedding because there are too many restrictions (in terms of colors and symbols). I will do an American wedding but may incorporate some Asian elements. Where are you guys getting married?

I'm Korean and FH is Chinese.
Lots of Asian-American brides have a western reception and have a tea ceremony and change into traditional Chinese dresses for the reception. It's a good mix of east and west.

Did you feel stressed to deal with your bridesmaids? Well, there are alot of different cultures. In Chinese wedding, brides are supposed to cover all their expenses vs. American wedding, they should pay for their own dresses. How do you do it?

You know what would be fun? If we have a Chinese/Asian GTG! I be we have loads of stories to share and tips to dole out.
I got married over the weekend at Westbury Manor (totally my style) and DH is as whitebread as you can get. Had to deal wtih so much crap from my family 'cus I didn't want to do the traditional chinese banquet and I actually raised concerns about having kids at my wedding!
Who the hell wants to worry about taking care of their infants when they should be having fun at a wedding?
Oh no, not if you're asian! It's totally unforgiveable to not invite all kids even the 1 day old ones! :P I could go on and on!
Anyway, I think it may be the sheraton hotel that does the chinese catering. Anyone tried it?

I am paying for all my bridesmaids.
The main reason for this is because in the past, I was in a bridal party where several bridesmaids were complaining about the money we had to spend.
I don't want my friends to be burdened by it.
I've visited a lot of the asian wedding places. i liked Eternal Wedding and Wedding Box in Flushing most.
Wedding One is also a popular choice amongst Asian brides. They are owned by Koreans but a lot of Chinese brides book them as well.
I haven't decided on a make up artist yet. I've had 5 trials already though!

I ended up going to a place in Korean Town, Kakabuka, and they were brillant, though rather expensive. I didn't have any bridemaids, which made life much easier. I highly recommend it if you can get away with it, or just having a maid of honor instead of an entire bevy of bridemaids.
My best friend, who had a very traditional Chinese wedding, have three, and she paid for our dresses. It's possible to find bridemaid's dresses quite cheaply, so I think if you do decide to have them it would be a nice gesture to pay for the dress, not to mention that if you pay for the dress you wouldn't have worry about getting them a thank you gift and feeling beholden, so it about evens out.

I know of three makeup artists/stylists who do asian brides and at great prices too! Sachiko (who did mine and alot of girls here), Reiko and Sissy Chan.
Also David Kalahiki, a hawaiian, but he's kinda expensive I think...
And i did have stress with one bridesmaid 'cus she sided with my family and thought everything I did was for DH's family so if I had to do it all over again I won't have asked her! She's an SIL so I can't boot her either! :P
Oh and she's the one who strongly reminded me that I SHOULD pay for her dress 'cus I ASKED her to be bridesmaid so I should be flattered she accepted?! That's so totally warped 'cus she should be the one honored to be asked. Whatever happened to Maid of Honor? She definitely didnt fit the title. :P
So I ended up paying for her damn dress and both my other bridesmaids (who i adore and would have paid for gladly 'cus they didn't ASKED!)... :P
I also paid for their hair and my SIL threw a fit 'cus I didnt pay for her makeup too. ARGH! I also gave them a very nice gift on top of it. :P
hlc200, don't get sucked into doing this! The girls should pay for their own dresses, hair, accessories and they should be flattered to be asked! Not the other way around! :P

Did you have a trial with Kakabua? Someone else had recommended them to me as well.
I STRONGLY prefer to have my hair and make up done in Manhattan. I had a major bridezilla moment at a terrible wedding studio in Chinatown and have been scared to check out any salons there.

The traditional American way is for bridesmaids to pay for their own dresses and hair/make up.
Most Asian brides I know paid for their bridesmaids. (this doesn't mean much because most of my friends are still unmarried so it's a very limited pool of people)

Hey could you give my former MOH a call about this? She feels I had to pay for her dress, hair, makeup and give her a damn gift on top of that!
The girl is just milking me! :P And I took it 'cus I didn't want anymore drama from her or her telling my family I'm a cheapskate. Sorry if I sound bitter but I had a lovely wedding and almost all went well except dealing with my Maid of Horror. :P
Your advice is great about having only 1 bridesmaid, it helps to have one great one, but more than 1 just invites trouble!

I have a mixed bridal party. Some are super excited and eager to help me. The others I expect to simply show up and look pretty for my wedding.
I felt a little hurt by the less enthusiastic ones but I think it has to do with personality. They aren't as "girly".
In hindsight I would have had a smaller bridal party.
It's fine though....

I had a trial with them --- the makeup artist is amazing, though the one complaint I did have is that she, like most Asian artists, likes to go a couple shades lighter with the foundation. After the trial I was really hesitant because I thought the foundation was too light (even though they kept on assuring me it's great),  but everything else looked very good. So I ended up going out and buying my own foundation, and she was happy to use that, so everything turned out well in the end.
It's a $600 package altogether, including the trial, a facial, makeup/hair. Unfortunately you don't have the option of not getting the facial and reducing the cost, but I think it's worth it. If you get the trial and decide not to go with them it's $200 for the trial only.

They can't even give me emotional supports. One girl dares to ask me if I change my wedding date for her because she wants to travel. Then, after I ask her to a bit research online, she would tell me that it's not bridesmaid's responsibility to plan the wedding. I am like... what is this? I do hurt when I heard about it because we are supposed to be a very closed friends (I met her since Freshman year in college). Am I retarded to ask her to be my maid of honor and getting myself into more troubles and stress?????

That is my BIGGEST peeve! foundation making your face whiter than the rest of your body. This bothers me sooooooooooo much, which is why I have avoided the korean make up artists.
Many Koreans use this makeup base that makes your face pasty white. THEN they put this twin cake powder that adds a little color but your face is still a different color.
I think only Korean people use this make up base.
I was really satisfied with my make up trial with Coco at Eternal Wedding. She was fantastic. I am just frustrated that they are located in Flushing. It will be very inconvenient for me to go there.
I had a trial with Sachiko as well. She was sooooooooooo nice. I loved the way she did my hair. Unfortunately, I liked the way Coco did my make up better.
I would recommend you to check out both these ladies.

Don't take it personally. I really think it's about personality traits.
I'm sorry you don't have a more supportive bridal party.
Remember you are marrying your fiance, not your bridal party.
The internet has lots of resources. You can get help elsewhere...like on here!
