already married girls!!!! [social security question] {update at bottom}

So my problem is that I start a new job on Monday and gave them my 'new' name...but I haven't changed my social security information yet. GRRRRRRR. I went to the office in Mineola b/c on the SS website for locations, that's the only location it gave me. I was there for an hour and told it would be HOURS before they got to me!

DOES IT MATTER WHICH ONE I GO TO???? I've heard that some locations are faster...but can I use the other locations? I'm starting to think not all because when you put in the zip code for a location, it gives you one 'in your area.' It took some making up of zip codes to even get an address for another office. I don't really want to wait WEEKS/MONTHS by mailing it in, but I don't want to sit in Mineola for HOURS either.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

If anyone knows whether or not I can use ANY location that would be great...b/c the sweet government only gives you an 800-number and it is ONLY automated.

Re: already married girls!!!!

I'm pretty sure you can use any one...SS is a national thing, not a local so I don't think it matters....I got married in NY and but live in VA and changed mine in the town where I work, not where I live

Re: already married girls!!!! [social security question]

I don't know if there's a difference in which office you go to. I went to the one in Patchogue, and I believe I got my card in the mail a week after I went to SS office. Plus, when I was at the SS office, they gave me a printout that says my name had been legally changed to Mrs. X and that I would be receiving my card soon.

Hope that helps!

ETA: I think you can go to any office, doesn't matter where you live.

Re: already married girls!!!! [social security question]

thanks. i'm going to try a different location that i was told was quicker. just needed some reassurance that i could go there....since i can't call the office directly!

side note/rant: you'd think they would give you the actual number so that people could call and find out what they need before they go in....would likely cut down on the wait for everyone!

Re: already married girls!!!! [social security question]

Very true. Not the most helpful office by far. I've never been there before, and it was an experience to say the least!

Re: already married girls!!!! [social security question]

dunno how close/far from the city you are, but i lost my ss card about a year ago and i went to the ss office downtown by city hall. it was about 15 minutes TOTAL. and i was born in nj, so my original ssc is from nj. it doesn't matter which one you go to. the one downtown was very quiet. the people there told me that it's b/c people don't really know it's there.

Re: already married girls!!!! [social security question]

Cheryl, I went to the one in Patchogue, you can go to any office. I went at about 3:30, half-hour before they close. Since they want to go home they were moving everyone along very quickly and I was out of there in no time!!

Re: already married girls!!!! [social security question]

I don't know if you are willing to travel but the main office is in Brooklyn. (They have convenient hours too. Mid-mornings are best.) I waited on line for 20 minutes. When you leave the SS agent will give you a letter stating that your name is officially changed. You can give your HR/Payroll Dept. a copy of that letter and then they can change your name.

HTH.

Congrats on all fronts.

Cheryl, there is one in Melville - or at least it used to be there - I went there years ago because I lost my SS card - I went during the week, and I waited no more than 1/2 an hour. See if that office still exists.

UPDATE: Lauren, I just got home from going there [and the bank!]. It's a smaller office...so fewer people go in! Only aobut 20 people and I got called before most of them b/c I hada simple request...unlike Mineola who seems to only call the hard cases first...where there were 300 waiting!

I COMPLETELY REC. THE MELVILLE LOCATION...CONVENIENT, AMPLE FREE PARKING!!!

1121 WALT WHITMAN ROAD
MELVILLE, NY 11747

9-4, M-F

All you need is your marriage license and the form. They didn't ask for anything else!
