Ring question for my friend. She needs our HELP!
Hello ladies, I know, haven't been on in awhile, crazy busy, but my friend needs help! She is about to get engaged (yay!) and she has a question about white gold vs. platinum (she needs to pick like by this morning). Any of you girls who got white gold wish they got platinum, vice versa? Pros and Cons? Thanks!

Re: Ring question for my friend. She needs our HELP!
Im not going to give you any pros or cons but I will say that my ring is 18k white gold and I absolutely love it. It definatly saved FH $ to do gold instead of platinum and that makes it better!
Besides, i am so in love with my setting that it could be made of plastic...
Best of luck to your friend! And make sure she gets on here ASAP!

i agree. i dont really think u can tell the difference by looking, but platinum costs alot more. plus i hear years down the road platinum dulls alot quicker. i have gold and love it.

Re: Ring question for my friend. She needs our HELP!
My ering is platinum, but I actually wanted white gold! My FH bought a ring that we looked at together, but it was already made in platinum, and when he asked them to make it in White Gold they lowered the price of the one already made in platinum for him...so they wouldn't have to make it over again!I don't think white gold or platinum really matters...The only thing I've noticed is that my ering is heavier than my white gold jewelry!
HTH!

Re: Ring question for my friend. She needs our HELP!
I have plat because it is a stronger metal and I have a history of losing stones. Fh gave me a ruby ring a few years back set in white gold and I lost the stone not once but twice. After that I had to have the posts replaced with yellow gold to make it stronger. It just didn't look the same after. So when it was time for the ering fh didn't want to take any chances so he went for Plat. The jeweler said he can guarantee I will not lose the stone. Also I was told that white gold will need to be redipped but the plat will just need to be polished.

Re: Ring question for my friend. She needs our HELP!
You will be able to tell the difference years from now because the two metals age differently. Yellow gold tends to yellow and fade over time, while platinum gets a dull, antiqued look. (So if your e-ring and wedding band should be the same metal!) Platinum can be repolished to keep it shining.I have platinum and that's what I always wanted. I don't think it's a 'life or death' decision, though. I doubt she could go wrong either way.
ETA - If you do go with white gold, I'd get platinum prongs. I wouldn't want white gold holding the stone in -- Platinum is a much stronger metal. (Even people I know who have yellow gold e-rings have platinum prongs)

platinum - and wouldn't have it any other way. i insisted on platinum because it's stronger. plus, now that i've had my ring for a while, i LOVE the way it looks with the darker metal and the contrasting sparkly, shiny diamonds.

I have WHITE GOLD. Im not a fan of platnum, even though DH wanted to get me it. My 2 cousins have platnum, and it looks dull after 3-5 years, and u CAN'T REDIP platnum [even tho my cuz says u dont have to...It does GET DULL!] at least white gold u can redip!

I have a white gold ring as well. Not only did FH save some $$ when purchasing the ring because of it being white gold, but I hear that white gold is better for holding diamonds than platinum. Like other girls have already said, platinum scatches more.good luck to your friend!

Re: Ring question for my friend. She needs our HELP!
Depends on the design. I thought I wanted Plat. but b/c my ring was custom made with alot of pave diamonds, it is impossible to shape the platnum like you can white gold and the designer would not be able to do it as well in platinum. She said she could but it would be difficult and not look as good. . If I wanted a plainer style, platinum would have worked, but since my ring is very ornate, I had to go with white gold. Now honestly, I don't see any difference. I really don't think it matters, JMHO.

Re: Ring question for my friend. She needs our HELP!
My ring is platium - there are pros and cons to both.someone mentioned you can't redip platinum - i dont think thats a bad thing - technically there is no such thing as 'white gold' - its regular yellow gold dipped in rhodioum. so you have to have it redipped every few years.
even though platinum is duller, it isnt as noticable as one may think.
eta: someone also mentioned the white gold ring 'shaping' when she was pregnant - platinum doesnt do that- as ou wear a gold ring, the gold will form the shape of your finger, platinum will always stay the same shape bc its stronger.

LOVE my platinum rings, the scratches are easily buffed out...personal decision...pros and cons to both as everyone said---I think there was a good post about this a few weeks ago that could be bumped.

Re: Ring question for my friend. She needs our HELP!
My jeweler told us white gold was the better way to go but make sure to get Platinum prongs! White gold is softer so if the setting prongs are white gold, there is more of a chance of losing the diamond!

Re: Ring question for my friend. She needs our HELP!
My ring is platinum. I am somewhat allergic to gold, so I had to get either platinum or silver.Platinum is a 'true' finish - white gold will wear off over time and will have to be redipped. Some have said platinum can't be redipped, but it is not 'dipped' in the first place, thats the true color of the metal. When platinum ages, it gets an antique look, called patina. If you don't like the antique look, you can have it cleaned and buffed and will look shiny and new. Both my e-ring and wedding ring are platinum and both have been wearing well, the stones have not come loose and they look great.
