i need literary junkies....

there was a story some girl @ work was telling me - and i am convinced it was a book i read in either HS or college english class.

please do not laugh @ me - as i only remember parts - but it sounded so eerily like this story - i am convinced this girl @ work made it up. i really need to know the title of this book. HELP!

here is what i remember from the book -

there was a girl who was in love w/ a guy named 'angel' - but i think her father couldnt pay the dowry - so she ended up with some other guy who she really didnt love but was weathy and good to her - and became prego w/ his baby. but she didnt love him so she left him and lives a poor miserable life - and because she wasnt married they wouldnt baptize this baby - so she did it herself - (i remember this was a big to do for the time period - churches were buring this book because of it) because the baby was dying and she wanted to be able to bury the child. than she ends up marrying the guy she didnt love - and than angel shows back in her life. so she stabs her husband and runs away w/ angel. but they dont get far and than she gets arrested for murder.

i also remember writing a paper about the irony of the man she loves leaving her because he couldnt accept she had a baby w/ another man - while the man she didnt love always took her back and loved her unconditionally.


what is this book i read?? it is driving me crazy!!

sorry about the warped synopsis i remember - but it makes me wish i payed more attention in school...

this does not sound like any book I've ever read in required reading.

it sounds like the Andy Warhol version of the Scarlet Letter.

similiar - except she doesnt wear an 'a' and her baby dies in infancy....

Story sounds familiar, but I don't think anything I read in hs.
