Marriage license, name change and Hempstead Town Clerk (long sorry)
Ok, so my fh and I had the day off today to attend my nephew's bris so after that we decided to go and get our marriage license in Hempstead since we never really have a day off together. You would not believe the hassle they gave me when I said I was NOT changing my name. The girl said this was my LAST chance to ever change my name and once I signed my license that was it!!! I told her that I thought she was mistaken. After 10 mins of trying to convince her that I did have a chance again but that I did understand that my marriage license could never be changed but that later I could change my license, SS etc.... She went in the back and then brought out a supervisor who sat down and said 'dear I hear you are having a problem with the name change situation' I said NO I am not having a problem it is You and the clerk who is having a problem. She said why is it that you don't want to change your name. It was none of her business. Even my fh who gave me a semi hard time about it did not give me the 3rd degree like she did. She said are you sure??? You will have problems down the line.... When I asked what problems she tried to say when I retire it will be a problem. What the ????&^ is she talking about??? She then brought the clerk back who asked me again for another 5 mins are you sure?? don't you want to hyphenate??? UGGGHHHH finally I said YES I am sure. Geez what an annoyance, just wanted to share and vent!!!

I would write the Town Supervisor a complaint letter. These clerks have NO right to even ask you twice. I could see if you were asking questions or unsure about something but that is insane! I would have told them to shove it!But it is over now and you never have to go back there again.

What did you have to show them to get your liscense? How long did it take? Also, I am getting married in a church and is the marriage liscense effective after my priest signs it? What happens when I send the ML back? I am really confused about the whole process.
Thanks!

You both need to go there with your birth certificate (with the raised seal) and your drivers license. We paid $25.00 cash.
It is good for up to 60 days. When you are married, it gets mailed right away and you get it back in about 3 weeks.

Re: Marriage license, name change and Hempstead Town Clerk (long sorry)
sirev- If you don't have your birth certificate with a raised seal they will also take a health insurance card or other form of idea. They won't take a social security card.If you or your fh has been divorced they need the certified copy of the divorce decree.
They give you a copy of the certificate and once your priest signs the certificate and sends it back to them in the envelope they give you they will then issue you the marriage license.
Hope this helps
