I think I am going to have my monthly friend for my wedding day!!
I am so upset! I wanted to go on the pill just to try to hold my monthly friend from coming for my wedding day but when I went to my new gyno, he told me I can't go on it b/c I have migraines with aura!
I can't believe this. I was on the pill for 8 years up until 2 years ago! None of my other gyno's ever mentioned this to me. My new dr. told me I can have a stroke b/c I get aura's before my migraines. Nonetheless, it's true b/c I searched it online.
He also told me that if I ever wanted to go on HRT, I could not do this either. Not that I would want to take HRT.
I can't think of any other way to hold my period off for my big day! uggghhhh..... He said maybe if I get stressed it might hold it off. No matter how stressed I get in my life, I've never gotten my period late.
I am in shock.....

Re: I think I am going to have my monthly friend for my wedding day!!
I get migraines with aura and i was on the low dose pill for years. Now the migraines has subsided since I had children, but I still get the aura and know how to fight them, but believe me when they used to come on a regular basis they were terrible....guess I kind of grew out of them. Anyway ask about LoOvral or any of the other low dose pills. Good luck

I suffer from migraines, but not with aura and I've been on the pill for years and years. Did the dr. say it's the aura part that is the reason you can't go on the pill?

Personally, I would get a 2nd oppinion if you want to be sure, and here's why...... (a little of my own personal info I don't mind sharing)
I have Epilepsy (its completely controlled) - and seizures usually start with auras....I am on BC and have been for years...
Reasons why - my doctor put me on a certain seizure medicine which is compatable with a low-dose of BC, Like Yasmin which is what I used to use. So - are you on any medicine to control the migraine and auras? Because that may be an option, if they are subsided, perhaps then you could go back on BC.
2 - I now am on the Nuva Ring - which is fantastic! You insert it up the Va JJ (Grey's Anatomy plug) and leave it up there for a month. The medicine goes directly into the girly parts where it's needed - it doesn't go through your blood stream at all, and therefore I wouldn't think it would interfere with the auras....but, I could be wrong which is why you should ask.
I've been through MANY Dr's and gotten so many oppinions on the human brain - now i go to NYU Epilepsy center, and my Dr is one of the best in the country, so I trust what he's doing.
Ok, that's my input with my own interpretation of the female anatomy.
I hope that helped some!!!

THIS IS ABSOLUTELY NOT TRUE! Nuva Ring Information
In relevant part, that product information states: "The Ring is inserted by the woman into the vagina similar to inserting a tampon. It remains there for three weeks, releasing the hormones into the blood stream."
The medication STILL gets absorbed by your body whether you take it orally or vaginally or through a patch. To the OP, it may be worth getting a second opinion -- talk to your doctor. BC is hormonal and needs to be absorbed to work - it isn't a topical solutions, even if you do get it through the ring or the patch.
Most of these BC products all have the same side effect warnings. It doesn't matter how you take them.
Please get a second opinion from a DOCTOR and don't rely on things said there.

Kara, if I decide to go on the pill, I would get a doctor's opinion. I was on the pill for many years and i know that all of them have the same warnings and side effects. I know the nuva ring is the same as birth control with hormones.
After I left the dr.'s office, i went home and did a search on migraines with aura and BC pills and my doctor was exactly correct. It says there is a risk of getting a stroke b/c of my conditon. I don't plan on getting a 2nd opinion b/c I dont' want to take that chance especially since I confirmed it with a few different websites online and it is in the pills warning and side effects area on the sheet they give you with the pill.
I would never rely on things said here unless my dr. confirmed it.

Re: I think I am going to have my monthly friend for my wedding day!!
The comments were directedly only to you, Trish. I wanted to write that so others who read this thread would know that information is totally inaccurate. With being able to order medications without prescriptions online and so many people avoiding their doctors, I was just worried someone would think that the hormones in Nuva Ring never went into your bloodstream... that could be dangerous.
Don't worry about your big day. My SIL had hers and it was no big deal.

Wow, your sister in law had hers and she was okay? That's good to hear. The only thing I am concerned about is changing the tampon or whatever with that huge arse dress on.
Thanks for the words of confidence, I appreciate it.

I should have noted it in my post but I cannot take any form of hormones. The hormones are what put me at a risk for a stroke.
I know there is no help for me, i just needed to vent.

You're welcome, anytime... I didn't know either until recently and I was on the pill for 8 years up until 2 years ago. A lot of dr.'s don't mention this to migraine sufferers. It is only bad if you have aura with your migraines. If you just have migraines, then you should be fine. But, if you have visual problems before you get a migraine, that is an aura.
Good luck...

She managed JUST FINE!! Seriously - as will you.
There is an alternative to tampons, too, that I have never tried - you only have to change it every 12 hours... I think they are called diva cups. I have only ever heard about them and have NOT tried them -- but it might be worth looking into (and doing several trial runs before the big day)!
Good luck!

Isn't there anything your gyno can do to induce your period? What about an emergency contracepitve pill or something... I'm guessing that has hormones in it though. ( I know nothing really about birth control because I don't take it) If you have it for your wedding will it be almost over or just starting? At least it will not be there for your whole honeymoon.
