Would you buy a dress with paint on it? UPDATE W/PICS

Hear me out first......

So I have the Maggie Sottero Grace Marie, and I added sleeves, and it's perfectly adequate. This is not the phrase I ever wanted to use for my wedding dress. They're slightly puffy, like a Juliet sleeve, but not big 80's puffy. I still kind of feel like Molly Ringwald's fat sidekick at the prom.

I found another dress that I really love, but it has a 4 inch long bit of paint on it (it bumped the wall during redecorating). It's actually the same color as the dress, but it's on an overlay, so you can see it. It will completely disappear once bustled.

I'd have to pay $100 to take in the bust, then I'd probably take it somewhere for the hem. I think I'd have a friend of mine sew the 3-point overbustle in permanently, rather than having hooks. I'd also make a bolero to take care of the sleeve issue. It's a few hours of work. Like, 6 hours. We're getting married outside, and we aren't walking in between two sections of guests. They will only see the back of the dress during the ceremony when I am directly facing the officiant instead of my FI or the reader.

Original price: $870.
Clearance price: $300.
Total damage: $500.
Money spent on MS Grace Marie (after alterations): $1400.

Re: Would you buy a dress with paint on it? First poll!

Just to be clear, the new dress after discount would be $300 and you have already put in a total dollar amount of $1400 on the dress you already have, right?

It was you that said earlier today about the undergarments and the corset and how it's fitting properly in the bathroom thread right?

OK, with all that said and considered, if I really really didn't like my current dress (fit, sleeves, ect) then I would pay the extra $300 + bust alterations for the dress I really wanted, even if it did have paint b/c only I would know it was there and that little bit of paint wouldn't make me as self consious as the 'puffy' sleeves or the dress not fitting properly.

does that make sense? Sorry, I didn't think my response was going to be that long.

BTW....do you have a pic of the new dress (from a website or something)

I suggest you get the dress if that is what you want to do. You DO only get one shot at it, and it would suck to look back at your pics and say to yourself, 'I wish I would have . . . '.

Re: Would you buy a dress with paint on it? First poll!

Yes, that was me with the ladies room thread (and my Mom actually did ask about it the night before).

I cannot find a picture of this dress ANYWHERE. I don't know the style number, but it's a DaVinci, it has a bodice that's separate, but tacked to the underdress.
Long train, straight neckline, zipper back, ivory.
The embroidery is little red, blue, and purple pastel flowers with sage greenery, and the bottom is finished in the same greenery with a bronze-y sort of face-down 'C' flourish. The embroidery comes down to a V-point from the neckline, up to a V from the toe, and the train has the V-shaped embroidery also.

Thanks for the input, keep it coming!

Re: Would you buy a dress with paint on it? First poll!

Question:

Can you take the sleeves you had them make & turn that fabric into a balero? Or even a shawl.....they could put hooks on the shawl and inside the dress so you can wear it, without having to tug at it.....

Whoever added the sleeves....can't you let them know you don't like the job they did on it and tell them to take them off?

I think your current Maggie dress is gorgeous....

It was a shawl to begin with, the one you buy from MS to match the lace on the dress. I need more coverage than a shawl provides.
In all honesty, she actually did a great job with the sleeves. It really looks like they were a standard part of the dress, except no one would make a dress that looks like it anymore. It seemed like such a good idea at the time when I asked for sleeves.

Re: Would you buy a dress with paint on it? First poll!

honestly i'd just get the paint dress... i know i'd feel really dumb to not buy it and then the day of invariably get something on the back of the dress that i didnt love anyway.

no one will notice. no. one.

Just make sure that you really dont like the dress you have and arent just being harsh. if they both had paint on them, which one would you choose?

Re: Would you buy a dress with paint on it? UPDATE W/PICS

Hmm well normally I would have voted for MS hands down because I usually love everything she designs. HOWEVER..with the dress you have , I was eh on it in the picture and I don't think it will look right with long sleeves; too closed up like you're beaing eaten by the lace.

I LOVE the new dress and this is my input; so you lost alot of money on the original dress. Yep ya did BUT you might be able to resell it and get back at least as much as the new dress would cost you AND you would get a dress you love. If you are getting married otuside, the dress is going to get stained anyway. Believe me. it will be WRECKED by the end along the hems and the bustle. Mine was and my best friend who got married at a lake destroyed hers.

my only concern would be for photos. If its something in a very visible spot, that might be an issue if you want a picture of the dress cascading-you know, an unbustled, full length shot. If you want those kinds of pics, I would be leery. But if its soemthing that can be worked around by using angles, then just tell your photographer in advance and the day of, that you have a minor issue and they should be able to geta round it. Thats their art and they're usually good at it.

All in all, I say get it because I didn't love my dress and still regret not having the funds to get a different one. Its only 500 bucks and as I said before, in thge larger scheme of things its not much since you already did slap down 1400. 1900 totall and you LOVE your dress. I say go for it.

That's exactly the perspective I was hoping to hear from. I've been debating whether or not it will matter what dress I'm wearing once the day comes. Maybe, on the day itself, it won't matter, I'll be too busy. It's hard right now to gauge how much it's going to matter when you're looking back, making albums, sending thank you's, and showing your kids your dress in 15 years.

Wow that dress is gorgeous!!!
As long as the paint really isn't too visible and if you feel like this is the dress for you I would go for it. You said it doesn't show at all when bustled, so that's good.

I think your Maggie dress is gorgeous! However, with that being said, you have to be happy with the dress you are going to wear. If you think this dress is the one then I say go for it -- paint and all!
