Re: NWR--- help i posted in pets but.. wanted pit puppy
FYI-there is no such thing as a black pit-they are dark brown not black. You are going to spend $$$$ for a blue nose-especially in NY if its from a reputable breeder. If your FH hasnt owned a pit before just know its a lot of work, time and patience-this breed of dog needs to be properly trained-especially males-they tend to be more hyper active then females. Not saying you shouldnt get onejust sayin be prepared for LOTS of training.

Yay, responsible pet ownership!Whatever you do, don't buy it from a pet store... please... Check out this website for more info on why: http://stoppuppymills.org/
Not implying that you would, juts if you were considering it...
I didn't even realize there was a pet forum on here?

Re: NWR--- help i posted in pets but.. wanted pit puppy
I've actually never heard of a blue-nose but my FH has a red-nosed pitt bull named Ozzie (I attached a pic b/c he's become my adopted son LOL). I know he got him from a reputable breeder but it was when he was living in FL. I will ask him if he knows of anyone or anyplace here in NY.

Re: NWR--- help i posted in pets but.. wanted pit puppy
Try calling the local shelters, especially Hempstead. Lots of pits on death row cause there are TONS on Long Island. In the last 2 months my rescue had taken in and adopted nearly 20 pit pups. We still have one of the mommas whose sweet at can be, shes about 2, and i believe shes brown/brindle. We also have a male white and black adult male, however his temperament is iffy since we got him from the SPCA, his family got into trouble with the law and i believe he went after one of the cops who then shot him in the face.. He survived but he gets weird sometimes. Make sure any pit you get has been socialized since terriers in general are not great around other dogs, especially small breeds.

Please go to a shelter...there are SOOOOO many.Check out Petfinder.com or 1-800-Save-a-Pet.com or spbr.org (Smilin Pitbull Rescue)
I currently have two pits and they are the best. Super smart, so training is easy, and such mushes. Good luck!

What about a Cane Corso??They're amazing dogs and I know of a breeder upstate who just had puppies. Both the parents are the blueish/grey color and they are to die for!

Which rescue are you with? I volunteer (or really used to... haven't in about 6 months or so..) with Bobbi & The Strays and we had a pit who was shot also!

Re: NWR--- help i posted in pets but.. wanted pit puppy
its so sad what types of homes pits belong to--- i love them they truly are amazing dogs-- it is just how u raise them to get them to a certain point-- it is so sad--- i just have a question that was brought up to me-- that pure breed pits are illegal in ny-- is this true? mine are mixes so im not sure? hmm

Re: NWR--- help i posted in pets but.. wanted pit puppy
I know that you really can't get homeowners insurance if you tell them you have a full-breed pitt bull. With ours, the vet and insurance company think he's a pitt/boxer mix LOL.

There are no BSL (breed specific legislation) laws in NY. So you can have a pit in NY, no problem. I licensed my pit with no problems. Not being able to get homeowners, I am not sure about, but that sounds like illegal discrimination to me, especially since there are no laws about getting pits in NYS.
I just want to reiterate what PegaLega and others have said about training. Make sure you do this. We got ours when she was a year from a friend who trained her at home, and because she understood basic commands and was great with other dogs then, we figured she didn't need to be trained professionally. We were wrong. She's a great dog, don't get me wrong, but at 2 years old she started getting a little too rambunctious around other dogs (except for one she's known since that dog was a puppy). I cannot walk her, she pulls me down the street and whimpers and barks at any inkling of another dog on the street or in a yard, in a window, etc. She listens in the house (for the most part) and comes when I call her in the yard, but out in public, there are too many distractions. I hope to bring her to a trainer after we are married, but finding a group training class that has only a few dogs (hoping this will work because I cannot afford a private trainer) is hard.
Good luck!!

Re: NWR--- help i posted in pets but.. wanted pit puppy
Yeah, their training is SO important! Our dog is an absolute mush with us, but he is VERY protective when/if he needs to be. FH did really well training him (long before I was in the picture) and he wants to have us get a female puppy once we're married so that we can 'socialize' Ozzie around other dogs. I am iffy about this but I trust FH that if he thinks Oz will be fine, he will be. We shall see what happens!

They are completely legal in NY, FIL is a retired NCPD cop and have had our pure breed for 10 years..definitely not illegal

Just so you know you are looking at a 3500 dog just a blue nose...when you talk Platinum blue nose you are looking at a 5k dog...that is if you get the dog from a reputable breeder with no mix in its bloodline.

Re: NWR--- help i posted in pets but.. wanted pit puppy
please please PLEASE dont buy a pitbull. pitbulls are the number 1 breed of dog that is euthanized every day. please save a life and go to a shelter. PLEASE. tell FH to stop being specific and get him a puppy that is in NEED.
