Help! I don't like my colors!

I originally chose lilac as the color that my BMs would wear because I was told that lilac is a good color for most people. I love the darker colors myself and hate pastels, but since I'm having a late morning/early afternoon wedding in July, I thought that the darker colors would be inappropriate. I've been looking at lilac-colored dresses and don't like the color. What would be appropriate colors for a daytime summer wedding that is not pastels?

PS: My FMIL already bought her dress, which is a burgandy/plum color (she needed to buy it ahead of time and I helped her pick out the dress and color). I need to find a color that would not clash horribly with her dress.

Re: Help! I don't like my colors!

How about a mocha color? or taupe, champagne?
Also muted red is an option or dusky mauve which would be darker than lilac, but not bright. Have you chosen the dress yet? You can look at the swatches for ideas

I was also going to suggest a mocha color, coffe or latte color...

Re: Help! I don't like my colors!

It is hard to say what color would go with FMIL dress. And I wouldn't be so concerned with her dresses as much as finding a dress you like your BM's in. Champagne and Sage are great options but, the rules of color don't really hold up anymore as to what is appropriate and what is not. In the 50's they had what are called snowball weddings..all the girls wore white. IMO I think you should find a color you like first and work from there. And if FMIL dress really concerns you that much, bring a swatch of her dress. LOL

Re: Help! I don't like my colors!

julybaby,

I too liked lilac in pictures but not when it came to dress shopping. I went to david's with my mom and MOH, and basically, since davids has at least one item in each color, we were able to figure out which colors looked nice. After I sort of decided on apple, I made sure that nobody had any serious problems with it, and that's how it all ended.

go to a store that has dresses in stock and check those out, keeping in mind FMIL's dress.

Re: Help! I don't like my colors!

i agree with you about pastels. i love purple and desperately wanted a dark purple/plum color but was talked out of it because we are havinga Sunday day wedding.
soooo, i ended up with 'violet' . it is a satin backed taffeta and has a 'champagne' color satin behind it. it actually is quite pretty and not too light.

Watters & Watters and Jim Hjelm have the same exact color. Listed as 'wood violet' below. Good Luck!!!

OOOps, forgot to actually post the dress. this isn't one of my dresses, but it gives you a better idea of the color. i think it is a nice compromise 'pastel'
good luck!

Re: Help! I don't like my colors!

Hi Claudia, I am getting married the same day as you and I am having burgundy dresses. I worried that a dark color would be inappropriate but then I got a lot of great feedback from the ladies here who have gone dark during the summer. I stayed away from heavy materials and opted for a burgundy dress that is somewhat 'flowy.' I think that the material you chose for the summer is more important than the color. You definitely should not feel compelled to chose a pastel color. Good luck

Re: Help! I don't like my colors!

I was thinking of a cornflower blue or a purple color like the one you showed the swatch for.

I LOVE champagne! I vote for that one! It's such a pretty color! And it looks great on everyone!
