Maybe a little circle talk....what is their name and what is something they did over the vacation.
I dont know how their writing skills are but also have them draw a pic of their summer and a simple sentence...great way for you to assess them as well. I really wouldnt do too much work with them, its the first time for many of them. So its really scary
A story is always a hit as well!!

i used to make a little tee shirt cut out and have them put their initial on the pockets an dthen design the shirt with their favorite things and share. you could also do design the shirt with things they did during the summer.

thanks I did that the two years I taught kindergarten and it was a quick bulletin board and the kids enjoyed it

thanks I did that the two years I taught kindergarten and it was a quick bulletin board and the kids enjoyed it
oh and you definitely get a lot of informal assessment information from that little tee shirt

I would love a CD suggestion for the Months in the year song and the Days of the week!!!!
I know them in my head, but I want to teach them the song through a CD.
Many I have heard are so corny!!!

oh man i wish i had my old plan book from then to look at for you guys; its been a while for me though.
There are tons of first day of school books perfect for kindergarten...oh i remember I did the kissing hand; such a cute book. I can't remember what activity i did with it though.
Mrs. Bindergarten gets ready for kindergarten is another one. I think the book goes though the alphabet.
i know i always started really early assessing what the kids knew. ABCs/ name/ numbers/ writing etc.
We were required to do guided reading almost right away so i really had to get going fast.
Definitely start the day with a circle and some songs. GEt the routine going from day one. You have to decide if you want to do a calendar sort of thing in the morning, couting the number of days of school, the days of the week, taking attendance (i always had them move their names off the school bus/ etc. and into the school), seriously i started my circle routine the first day of school. it doesn't have to be long but any kind of thing that you want to require i would start right away.
you can do a cute circle song like "M my name is michelle and I like to make muffins" havve them fill in their name and something they like.

Thanks---I love that book too! I was also thinking of the First Day Jitters.

the 1st day jitters poem is adorable! I had lil bags made up fpr my students (3rd graders) with the poem and all the stuff from the poem in it!
Also I sent each child hoome with a brown paper bag and a lil note telling them to put a show and tell item in it- close it up and staple it and for them to write 3 clues or draw 3 pictues for their clues! The next day we'd play a game where everyone had tt guess what their secret object was. It was cute and they loved it!
