Changing last names

I asked this on the NWB but I figured I'd ask here too.

For anyone who is changing their last name, are you changing EVERYTHING?

When I was at the bank the other day we were talking about changing my last name. Someone told me NEVER to change my name for Social Security.

I am in school and EVERYTHING goes through my SS#. Won't this get confusing if my legal last name is changed but my SS is not?

HELP

Thanks

Re: Changing last names

I am changing everything.

i think i will do it over time though as not to confuse anyone. i'll start with SS, then drivers license, passport, bank account, credit cards and last household bills.

i think with work i'll leave my name just because thats how everyone knows me and its just easier, but if i start sending out resumes i'll use my married name.

i think its something that will take a while for everyone to get used too

Re: Changing last names

I've never heard that about SS. What reason did they give you? I've changed everything.

Re: Changing last names

I think I am legally going to keep my last name. HOwever, if someobody asks for Mrs. XXX I will not be all 'thats not MY name' and stuff...

Maybe I will change it but keep my old name at work.

I really like my current name.

Re: Changing last names

Betty thanks for bringing this up.
I don't want to change ANYTHING. But I promised FH I'd add his last name on, so it will be Lizabeth A. XXX XXX (no hyphen)

Can I do that on the marraige license and leave everything else the way it is now? What are the legal implications of that?

Re: Changing last names

You can put your new name on the marriage license, and then do whatever you want. There are no legals ramifications if you never change anything else. It is entirely up to you.

Re: Changing last names

For all my paper work, I just added his name on to mine. At work, I go by my maiden name and socially I go by his.

This is what I felt most comfortable with.

I am changing it all, too. Thank goodness his last name isn't ugly!
If it was I would keep my own!
