Re: is anyone doing ATkins Diet

Jenn - my Fitobe did it and lost a lot of weight. He just went for a blood test and everything is ok. This is the same diet reccomended by the national diabetic foundation becaus the diet works best for people who have a tendency towards diabetes (which doesn't mean you are going to get diabetes but if it works really well it lets you know to watch yourself) He's been doing this for a while now - almost 2 years and slowly weening himself off of it. There is a lot of stuff out there at health stores so it is not just meat! They even make pasta that virtually carb free. Check witha dr. before you do it but it does work. Just be sure to take your vitamains and keep a watch on your health

Re: is anyone doing ATkins Diet

I did this diet a few years ago, and after I was done, I felt HORRIBLE. I lost absolutely no weight, and was sluggish for 2 weeks after. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone!

Re: is anyone doing ATkins Diet

Be careful - if you work out everyday, having no carbs in your system to use as fuel may not be good for you. You may find yourself lacking energy and your workouts will suffer (don't know how hard you work out).
Like jenny2penny said, too much protein is hard on your kidneys, so be sure to drink a LOT of water.

Re: is anyone doing ATkins Diet

This diet isnt for everyone - but most times you won't know until you try it. I've heard HORRIBLE things about it and then some great things. To each their own. Just remember that this is a VERY TOUGH diet. It is also made for people who want to lose more than - I think - 40 pounds. Check the book.

Edited to say: You aren't supposed to exersize at all points in this diet. You need the carbs to exercize. You aren't supposed to untiil the end of the diet when you want to start transitioning back to normal eating. DON'T go into this blindly - it requires research and STAMINA

Re: is anyone doing ATkins Diet

jenny2penny - I'm assuming you're a trainer? Or do you work for a clinic or something? Just curious
I would love to get into that line of work (if I had to change professions). I'm a health/exercise nut

Re: is anyone doing ATkins Diet

I go to a low carb nutritionist which is based on Atkins. I think the problem is that people think Atkins is all fatty meat and cheese and eggs and bacon. If you read the book you will realize that these foods are limited- as in any other diet. I eat lean protein, veggies and about 2 ounces of cheese a day. I try not to eat any sugar. I keep my carbohydrate consumption down to 50 grams a day (equal to about 2 apples). I do eat fruit- people don't think you can on atkins- i eat those fruits with less natural sugar such as berries & melon. i try not to eat anything that will spike my insulin - which happens when you eat sugar (or carbs). I pretty much eat like a diabetic... so how could that be dangerous?

I have lost 15 pounds and feel great - when i eat too many carbs is when I feel sick- get heartburn and I break out from it..

Re: is anyone doing ATkins Diet

I know people who have lost huge amounts of weight on this diet. I don't think it's healthy, and it doesn't teach you how to eat right...I love The Zone Diet, and my nutritionist swears by it!

Re: is anyone doing ATkins Diet

Your brain does not only use Carbs for energy- that is a big myth- your brain works way better on ketones- which your body creates when it is burning its own fat...

I've been eating limited Carbs for 5 months and I am getting As in grad school- so I haven't been reduced to a mental midget yet.

Re: is anyone doing ATkins Diet

I've never heard about your brain using carbs either...

I do agree that it's not the healthiest way to lose weight.. but everyone's bodies are dif and they diet is dif... do what works with you and something you can stick with.

Re: is anyone doing ATkins Diet

If you do end up doing it, get a month's supply of tic tacs. The diet gives you bad breath!

Good luck! And speak to your doctor about it.

Re: is anyone doing ATkins Diet

DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!!

A know a few people who worked for Dr's insurance co. and some Dr's and they have all said that there are too many complications from Atkins. Many end up with permanent kidney and liver damage. AND SOME many of those were under Dr.'s care.

There is however a similar diet which cuts your carbs in a healthy way. Check with your dr.- basically you eat fruits and veggies and just cut out the breads, rice, potatoes, and regular or diet sugars (the sugar in your diet drinks works the same as regular sugar on your body) So you basically drink water, or plain tea - and then - you can eat all the veggies you want, limit your fruit but eat some fruit and then protein.

This is similar to Atkins but supposedly healthier. JMO but I would recommend seeing a nutrionist.
