Re: Greek Islands
I think my favorite was Rhodes - I just liked the feel of the old castle (it's a very "artsy" area) and loved seeing the mountains of Turkey in the distance.
Santorini is stunningly beautiful and romantic and looks exactly like every picture of the Greek Islands you see. White buildings, white streets and sidewalks and blue roofs.
Mykonos - I know a lot of people rave about it, but I thought it was just "ok." I wasn't in to going clubbing and that's really what that island is all about.

Re: Greek Islands
oh and I have to be honest, I was a little disappointed in some aspects of Greece. I really thought it would be steeped in history and mythology and all that good stuff. Most of the ancient Greek artifacts are in the British Museum. I didn't realize it when I went to Greece, however, I was lucky enough to see most of them when I went to London the following year.
I found it to be unlike Italy where they embrace the ancient culture and try to show it off. In Greece, it's more like when you live in NYC - you know what a wonderful city it is, but you kind of take it for granted and sometimes wonder what all the fuss is about.
However, the Greek islands are absolutely amazing. When I was there some of the archeological sites were closed (it happens quite often for research purposes) but we did get to Akrotiri on Santorini which was pretty cool. The people are wonderful and warm too! As soon as you say you're from NY, they will ask you if you are from Astoria and if you know so and so. It's really charming.
