Weird foods that aren't so weird to YOU

Are there any foods that you grew up eating - maybe something from your family's nationality - that others think are just plain weird?

Last week I was eating an asparagus and potato fritatta at work and at least 5 people asked 'what IS that??' in a way that made me feel like I was eating human remains.

Yes- jewish foods like gefilte fish and chopped liver! They sound SOOOO gross but I LOOOOOOOOVE them!

Merf my dad and his family eats all of that and I gag. I cant even stand the smell. My dad looks forward to the holidays because he knows its the only time he'll get to eat those foods.

Though I do like lox on my bagel

I know what you mean. I am american my family is from the south, but I have been exposed to different cultures and I love the foods of these cultures.

I was eating oxtail one day which is a West Indian dish and I get weird looks from people.

Unfortunately there are alot of people out there who are not exposed and are close minded.

Being my family is mostly Polish, we have 'plotski' (or whatever it si called) (just like the bread you get aat communion) before we say Grace at Holidays....we also have pierogies..and my grandma makes jim na nuggie...I think its like pig knuckles in gelatin or something....only my uncle eats it!! uuuuugh...I cannot stand to loook at it....


But at work today I had a knish, and the girls were like....*** is that??! LOL...

But...there is a lot of people who are from Portugal around Rhode Island, so they eat a lot of CHourico (cherise is how its pronounced) and some other Portuguese foods...The stuff is GOOD tho!

My mommmy used to make me Cucumber and mayo sandwiches on white bread and that used to be THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Holly - I have oblatki (sp?) on holidays too and my dad makes the best pierogies. It's an old family recipe.

Lisa...DH loves squid and octopus...they are staples in Spanish cooking...but I could never (I don't eat any fish anyway)

my mom used to make us german pancakes (more like crepes) for dinner...when my dad was away on business

but the weirdest...in spring it is a german custom to have 'brown kale and pigsknuckles'

My dad LOVES bolied lamb heads, complete with eyes, brain and teeth.
I absolutely CANNOT watch him eat them.

I've grown up on the polish foods too! jim na nuggie (however you spell it) is nasty! I used to eat the meat until I went veggie about 10 years ago. How about Babka and crusticki? YUM! Oh, and then there was kugalus (however that is spelled too!).

What is Kugalus? NO idea on that...Loooove Babka and loooove crusticki...have to get it from the old polish ladies in Polishtown in Riverhead during the Polish Festival....LOOOOOVE potato pancakes too...mmmmmmmmmmmmmm..yummmmy!!!

I LOVE Babka!! my Polish neighbor bakes it with my mom every year...now my mom is an expert!!!

Graded beets with mayo and bits of herring! It's a russian jewish thing, a salad really, and it's called 'shuba' which in russian means 'heavy fur coat'. I guess because it's so thick and filling! Sometimes people grade boiled egg on top for decoration, and it also makes it taste even better! I ablolutelly love it! My mom and granma make it really good! Once my DH brough it to work for some ' BYOF' lunch and all his co-workers freaked out when they found out what's in there and refused to eat it! I guess beets, hearing and mayo doesn't go together here, but I grew up eating that stuff at every family get-together! Yummy!

Kreplach,Perogies,chopped liver,gefilte fish.hockflesh(spicy hamburgers) ,hard salami(My dad used to hang it to dry and my friends that were not Jewish had no idea why there was salami hanging from a cabinet in the kitchen), kenerberwich(garlic ring),salmon salad. They are all very good even though a lot of people would think it was weird to eat.
