guest list disaster FMIL driving me insane!!!

We made our guest list a month ago. Invites went out a week and a half ago. We invited 155 people at that time, knowing full well that some won't be able to come, which is fine because mom doesn't want to have to pay for more than 125. Well, we went over the guest list w/FMIL TWICE before I sent the invites, and now she's going "Well, who did you leave off? I don't want to slip and mention that they may be invited to the wedding. I would have invited so-and-so instead and left off (insert couple's name here)..." and on and on and on. We only left off 5 of the couples she wanted to invite, and she hasn't even spoken to them in months anyway! I want to tell her, "Well, If I was YOU, I'd keep my darn mouth shut!" It's too late NOW, obviously, but we kept the names on the list in case we get a lot of no's back, and there is still plenty of time to mail more if necessary - the response date is Aug. 5th. AAARRRRGGHHH If I go downstairs right now I know I'm gonna have to say something to her!

I was thinking about that! She is not paying for ONE SINGLE THING!! My parents are paying for everything and if they don't want to pay for more than 125 I think she should just leave it alone and mind her own business!

I think you calmly tell her that its not financially possible to invite these people right now, but if she would contribut X amount of dollars you would be glad to send out the invites.


or she can wait for the no responses

you can give her the option to invite those people, and whoever responds yes she needs to give you the money cause they are not in your budget

I have tried to discuss this with her calmly and rationally - her response is always "Well, I would have not invited.... and asked this one instead" Now I'm just trying to ignore it but she just gets under my skin. Rational is not in that woman's vocabulary.

See, I was half being a PIA about the telling her to pay, but I also do believe there are ways you can explain that she can pay for her portion of the guest list that she feels she was gyped on. Good luck!

when she talks about the people she wouldn't have invited...tell her that FH wanted to invite them...whether he wanted to or not
