Do any of you know of any little kids that had a problem with their speech when they were young?

The child has been getting speech lessons every week but hasn't improved. Do you think he needs more lessons a few times a week or maybe it will improve when he starts going to school?

Re: Do any of you know of any little kids that had a problem with their speech when they were young?

speech problems is one of the most common special ed issues in elem schools...and they are almost always correctable...(think james earl jones)

but I do think it takes more than a few lessons (in some cases years) to fix speech problems?

how old is the child? my niece is 3 months shy of 5 and has just started pronouncing her 'r's...sometimes it just clicks with kids

Re: Do any of you know of any little kids that had a problem with their speech when they were young?

It really depends on what the reason for the speech delay is. If it's articulation, that's relatively easy to correct, while something like apraxia can be much more challenging.

Re: Do any of you know of any little kids that had a problem with their speech when they were young?

It can also depend on mom/dad's involvement in the therapy. If it is for one day a week, then the other 6 days a week the parents MUST actively work with the child. Many parents just think 'well he goes for a class' but they are the people who are with him/her the most and they need to do work every single day. Also, some problems take a lot longer to correct than others.

Re: Do any of you know of any little kids that had a problem with their speech when they were young?

My nephew is 2 1/2 and has started speech - he is very difficult to understand. The services are free, so my brother and SIL started him without thinking twice about it.

Speech issues are very common - but when caught early, most times can be remedied...
