Property Taxes Re-Assessment
Anyone on LI hire someone to have their taxes re-assesed? Looking for a recommendation. I am in Nassau if that makes a difference.

Re: Property Taxes Re-Assessment
Denise ... you can't get your taxes reassessed if you payed more than market value for your home. Since Nassau now bases your taxes on the market price, if you paid more then the assessed value (which most of us did), then you will more than likely not get any adjustment. You can check out your assessed market value on mynassauproperty.com.We applied for STAR though and got a decent savings that way.

Re: Property Taxes Re-Assessment
Thanks Cira. yes I definitely paid more than the assessed value...hmmm.. I have to see about the star then.It is just strange but all my neighbors keep telling me I have to go get this done - it appears everyone in the neighborhood knows all details of everyones lives....lol.
Do you know anythign like pool permits and stuff. The previous owner had one and said that increased their taxes but since that doesn't transfer over in sale I would like that adjusted....not sure how much but I would think anything counts!

Re: Property Taxes Re-Assessment
We started getting stuff in the mail in the spring from a company that was the same one our real estate lawyer recommended. It was Mark somthing or orther. They told us that you had to wait at least a year because for the first year they would just look at the selling price.

Re: Property Taxes Re-Assessment
You live in Bellmore right? We ALL lost our re-assessment appeals because Charles O'shea (someone big in the county tax assessment office) lives in Bellmore (on the open bay) and mysteriously his assessment went down. Newsday did an expose on him and they punished all of us who tried to fight it. I went down there with my bank appraisal from march of 2002 and was told verbally that I won until that expose came out. Go for the Star program........I saved $907 a year with it.Good Luck

Re: Property Taxes Re-Assessment
apply for STAR if you haven't yet. check the county's assessment office for details on filing dates...it's usually at the end of the year. it brought down our taxes $1,222!!!

Re: Property Taxes Re-Assessment
The application has to be in between Sept. and Dec. You see the savings in the following October's school taxes

Re: Property Taxes Re-Assessment
I think the Star dates vary depending on where you are. You can submit at any time, but you have to own the house by a certain date for it to take effect with the next tax year. In our case we moved into the house in late April and it was too late for getting the paperwork in for the following December start date, so we won't see savings until this December
DH's cousin in Brookhaven had to have his paperwork in by this past May for it to take effect in December of this year I think. Welcome New Vendors
