MultiCultural Books for Children...

Since Im taking a Childrens Lit Class this semester, WHICH I LOOOVVVEEEEE , Im hearing about and reading about SO MANY great books for children of all ages...

Im currently reading (this week's assignment =) about many, many multicultural books that are highly recommended and are great to have in your child's library...

There is much discussion on whether books truly represent a culture. The Multicultural Booklist Committee of the National Council of Teachers of English evaluates books and even eliminates books that they feel are not adding value (or even stereotyping cultures)... So my text has pretty accurate sources and great recommendations...

Some that seem great so far are:

*African American Literature: The People Could Fly by Virginia Hamilton (breathtaking illustrations!!!) This book won MANY awards...

*Asian American Literature:
So Far from the Sea by Eve Bunting. The illustrations are interesting in that, when the author is 'looking back' the illustrations are in black/white. All other pages are in color. Very effective technique!
Theif of Hearts by Laurence Yep.

Latino Literature:
Parrot in the Oven : mi vida By Victor Martinez
Chato's Kitchen by Gary Soto.

These are all phenomenal authors to even be mentioned in my text

I'll keep posting as I come across more that catch my eye. Any requests ??

Re: MultiCultural Books for Children...

Have you read Seedfolk? It's great...more for 'older' kids though.

I got my Master's in Literacy, so I took a class like that and LOVED it too!
