CRAFTY GIRLS - Any ideas for restoring a wrought iron patio table and chairs?

My inlaws have a 40+ year old wrought iron table with glass top and matching iron chairs that is wasting away in the garage. It's kind of old and cruddy looking right now, but I see an awesome project and possibilities in it! The chairs are detailed with leaves and flowers. It's all a buttercup yellow right now, but very dirty and can use a big face lift....I think it could be really charming for our little yard.

Any ideas crafty ladies?? Can you just paint over old iron?

Sand the old color off of it and start over!!!!

I'm afraid to just paint....I don't want it to come out goopy! What kind of paint do I use?

First you need to sand off all the rust, wash it down, to get off all the crud. You are better off using a rust proof spray paint -- I think its Crylon. Pick a color and then go to the fabric store to pick a nice heavy fabric. You can do the Reupholstering yourself.

My father did this a few years back.

Sand it down, paint it again and then reupolster the chairs.

Definetely rust proof outdoor spray paint. My mom does it all the time.

If the original paint is thick or gloppy you can use a paint remover and wire brush. If the original paint is in good shape but just needs freshining up, use steel wool to lightly sand the surface then use a rust proof paint applied with a sprayer.
