We had decided on Wantagh, Seaford, Massapequa or Massapequa Park but ended up in Bellmore. Go Figure!

Re: Homeowners - Did you all have an idea of where you wanted to live before buying the house?

I just knew Nassau and less than an hour commute into NYC - we searched all over until we kept coming back to Bellmore. I had never even heard of Bellmore before I began looking for a house. I started with a LIRR schedule/map.

wacky - I have to add we were totally clueless about LI. DH grew up in SI and I grew up in Queens...they only reason we chose LI is because DH didn't want to live in a borough and I didn't want to live outside of NY (meaning no CT or NJ). Our choices were Westchester and LI. I am more familiar with Westchester because I went to college there but we decided LI was more convenient to both of our families and then we decided to get married in LI and from visiting vendors we became more familiar with LI. Once we decided on LI - we always thought North Shore (just based on what many people had told us). Well as I started visiting random neighborhoods we picked off the LIRR map - we realized we could get more for our money or at least more what we wanted in the South Shore and I just felt more like I fit in and that was huge for me. IT was really hard for us to find a town but so far I am very happy with my decision!

The taxes are high but the schools are in the top 10 nationally.

I love Franklin Square. That is home to me! I was there visiting my inlaws wondering if I made a mistake moving here instead. The people are all friendly ......we know everyone. I miss it sooo much!

Try and narrow it down. It gets so overwhelming that looking in so many neighborhoods can get crazy!!

Re: Homeowners - Did you all have an idea of where you wanted to live before buying the house?

We took forever to find a house. DH says we saw over 100 but I dont think so. All I can say is if you are not sure where you want to buy start looking now. One of the reasons it took us so long is we seriously looked in 3 different areas.

Re: Homeowners - Did you all have an idea of where you wanted to live before buying the house?

We were interested in North Shore locations and were trying to find a property north of 25A.

We narrowed down the towns to Oyster Bay, Cold Spring Harbor, Huntington (preferrably the Harborfields SD), Centerport, and Northport.

We ended up finding a home in Huntington in the Harborfields SD.

I grew up in whitestone and wanted to stay in the neighborhood. Thankfully, my husband likes the area too and we found a house.

Re: Homeowners - Did you all have an idea of where you wanted to live before buying the house?

since you have some time...both newsday and the NYT do a neighborhood write up every week...(Newsday exclusively LI, but NYT will do the entire metro area...they did my dad's hometown in CT - passed Bridgeport)

they give you basic demographics, medium home prices, etc etc

Re: Homeowners - Did you all have an idea of where you wanted to live before buying the house?

We knew we wanted to be waterfront on the North Shore, we didn't care if we ended up buying just property and pitching a tent for the next 5 years (thank god we didn't have to do that)...

and we also knew that we had to stay close to FI's animal hospital, because of ERs, etc. It took us about 6 months, but if you only count really actively looking, I'd say 1 month.

Re: Homeowners - Did you all have an idea of where you wanted to live before buying the house?

Another new Bellmore home owner here. It was one of the four towns that we were intereseted in (merrick, bellmore, wanthagh, massapequa) because of the closeness to the highways and RR. I found all of them to be similiar in many ways, and in the same price range. BEllmore's taxes do appear to be slightly lower and we just fell in love with the house when we saw it.

Re: Homeowners - Did you all have an idea of where you wanted to live before buying the house?

We are in Merrick now, but just sold and bought in Bellmore. I grew up in Bellmore and still have some family there and it is convenient to the LIRR for DH to go to the city and I am 8 miles from work
