i think it's an unfortunate thing.
it happens...what can you do? the cop has to live with that now too.
you don't know what they are faced with (unless you are a cop or a loved one of a cop)
it's sad all around for everyone.
i'm sure he didn't say: 'hey, let me shoot this black teenager for no reason'

I think when you make a major mistake the on the job like that- there should be some type of reprimand. I'm not saying go to jail- but keeping salary and pension for all times isn't right either... if I screwed up that bad- I would be fired.

You know.. for all that I disagree with you on a lot of things.. this one I must give you credit for.

You Nailed it on the head. This is exactly what I was thinking.

Lets not forget.. the cop still has to face internal hearings. He may still lose his job.

You also don't take your life into your hands when you arrive at work every day. This is a situation unique to emergency workers and shouldn't be compared to what the rest of us do.

Re: Not indicting the police officer who killed Stansbury...anyone hear about this?

I am the daughter/sister/sister-inlaw/grandaughter and wife of cops, so I may be a bit bias , but here goes:

Kelly should NOT have gone on television and said the shooting was unjustified before any investigation was complete. If the grand jury does not find that his actions were criminal, than that shoud be it. I am sorry, but I do not think this cop left his house that morning looking to shoot and kill anyone. I am so sick of every little thing being blown into a huge race issue. Would everyone care as much if the kid was white, or if the cop that shot him was black too. I honestly think it was not intentional

Re: Not indicting the police officer who killed Stansbury...anyone hear about this?

Jenn and Liz...Totally agree here!!!!!!!

Its a sad thing, that it is but coming from a family filled with police officers, no one has the right to say it was 'unjustified' when they clearly do not know all the facts. Kelly came out saying that one day after the incident. How was he to know anything at that point?

Also, I dont know his name but there is a man who is an advocate for this family who keeps saying..he should not have had his gun drawn..ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! WHY NOT??

To me that is insane, my own father patrolled the rooftops of harlem projects for more years then I care to remember and he came across horrible things and situations. He in no way has a right to say that our police officers shouldnt protect themselves. That is just plain wrong!

Re: Not indicting the police officer who killed Stansbury...anyone hear about this?

I do not think that by Kelly saying the shooting was unjustified, he meant the cop was guilty of a crime.

If this shooting was an accident, then it was unjustified, there was no crime being committed, the officer was not threatened.

I do not think that he should have been charged with a crime because it was an accident, but he was negligent.

Re: Not indicting the police officer who killed Stansbury...anyone hear about this?

How did he know that this was an accident merely one day after it had happened??

I am sure all the facts werent in order and Kelly is there to stand by his men and support them..not to be the first one to turn against them. Even if he maybe would have said that days after the incident I would feel differently but one day after, if that??

Kelly just rides on whatever Bloomberg wants anyway..and god knows..Bloomberg never wants to make waves that he cant handle. JMO.

What I got from Kelly's remarks was that the cop not only was unthreatened, but that he knew the teen was unarmed and shot him for the hell of it.

An accident could be justified IF the cop wrongly assumed the teen was armed and was going to cause harm.

Not really. The cop was justified in shooting because his job is to protect. If a split second decision turns out to be wrong, it's a tragic mistake, but he is still able to justify his actions, in that he was protecting himself and/or others.

My DH is a cop, and I'd rather he make that tragic mistake than take a second longer to think about it and be killed. JMO, flame me if you'd like.

Re: Not indicting the police officer who killed Stansbury...anyone hear about this?

I agree Jenn..

Living my life with my father a police officer then promoted to a detective, my uncle a sergeant and my aunt an officer as well..

My mom said these exact words the other day as well. So I 100% agree with you.
