Re: Chinese Brides - past, present, future?

We've booked with OUO - saw them at a wedding a few years ago and thought they were really good...no cheesy games, had the crowd up and dancing (which can be difficult with Chinese people).

For photo/video, we're going with Duet.

Re: Chinese Brides - past, present, future?

i think the cakes are pretty too but i don't know if there are any NY Bakeries that would make them and not charge a crazy price These cakes were mostly made by bakeries in California where there is a relatively large commercialized industry for Chinese folks

Re: Chinese Brides - past, present, future?

does it have to be a chinese photographer? i'm chinese but i really havne't liked any chinese photographers until i came across Duet, who are Korean, btw.

But you can definitely do better with experience and not focus on ethnicity...

As for the cake, I'm doing the white cake with the cherry blossoms and double happiness sign that you posted.

Go to any bakery and show them the picture, they can give you a price. FM me if you wanna chat more...

Re: Chinese Brides - past, present, future?

I'm Korean and visited a few of the Chinese vendors in both Flushing and Chinatown.

I found their service to be subpar to the normal American vendors. I'm probably not going with any Asian vendors.

Of the ones I visited, I thought Eternal Wedding and Wedding Box were the best.

Re: Chinese Brides - past, present, future?

Wedding Group One and Duet are quite popular if you must go with Asian vendors. They are run by Koreans but very popular amongst the Chinese as well.

Re: Chinese Brides - past, present, future?

I checked out wedding one and they definitely have awesome, better quality photos than most of the Chinese places but I went and signed with Eternal for the amount of stuff you get for the price. Eternal is giving me 5 photo albums, 2 huge 20inch portraits, full DVD proofs, bm dresses for all the bms, tuxes for all the guys, limo service, a videographer and 2 photographers! (the extra photographer cost us more btw) They provide wedding gowns and evening gowns too but for a better fit, I decided to buy a wedding dress... I don't know how the pics will turn out but I will definitely post pics up for everyone to see. Coco also is awesome from Eternal!

I'm stuck on a DJ now though.... Looking into OUO and not sure who else is good for bilingual MC's....

Those pics sandelion are awesome! I love the dress and you guys are such a cute couple!! Thanks gals for all the opinions and support! I hope other gals will post their experience too with other vendors in the area!

Here are some pics of traditional Chinese marriage hanfu (pre-Qing dynasty as Qing was ruled by Manchurians who popularized the more commonly known Qi Pao/Cheong Sham attire)

i love the little girl in the hanfu

oops... corrected typo

Re: Chinese Brides - updated w/ cake, traditional attire pics

hi eden, i'm glad you liked the hanfu!! you can read about it on: http://www.hanfu.org/

there are a few ebayers that sell the attire if you do a search for 'tang costume'

for my own wedding though, i wanted to use good quality fabric so i had to find my own hanfu maker. it was a terrible pain seeking a hanfu maker b/c most chinese tailors don't know how to make a proper hanfu. and if they do, they'll charge you a couple hundred bucks.

I had to actually ask my uncle who works at TVB (hong kong television company) to ask one of the costume designers to make my hanfu. she was making costumes for the Miss Hong Kong pageant at the time and didn't finish my hanfu!!!

The night before I left Hong Kong, I ended up *thankfully* finding a Chinese tailor who actually made the costumes for Wong Kar Wai's 2046 film to finish it up!! :) It was a crazy crazy ordeal I tell you.

However, IF you're not too hung up on using traditional silk and or the proper cutting for your hanfu, just buy it on ebay! There's a dude that makes hanfu in the US online by the name of Hong Gallery but he charges $300 for a subpar hanfu - used very heavy material that looked luxurious but was not good quality and the cutting was terrible. He really ticked me off (I ordered my fh's from him) because we had come to an agreement on the price and then he tried to add fees here and there. If you search the internet and run into him, he'll make you a hanfu but be wary of his business practice. I personally don't know how to deal with people like that! I hope that helps!!

here's some more pics from my image gallery...

Re: Chinese Brides - updated w/ cake, traditional attire pics

ooh...hehehe one more thing! regarding the tradition - not too many Chinese folks know about the hanfu as 'tradition' because the last dynasty of China was so incredibly long (Qing) and the Manchurian govt did a great job of submitting the Han Chinese folks to their rule (ie. mandating all Han men leave a pigtail and shave the front of their head). And then 70 years down the road, you had Mao who with the Cultural Revolution pretty much erased what else was left of the cultural memory. Today, most people know about the Cheong Sham or Qi Pao because that was what the Manchurians wore (closest to memory). And partly also because not many people can make the hanfu, it's not as easily commercialized as the Qi Pao.

Most Chinese folks regard hanfu as something very ancient and they'll know of it if you show them a picture but they'll have no idea where or how to get one, much less wear it to their wedding! The hanfu however was what the Japanese Kimono and the Korean Hanbok is based on as it spread from China to to neighboring East Asian countries mostly during Tang. And the reason why I know about this is because I did a bachelors and masters in East Asian studies ok... and i'm a nerd about this sort stuff too

you'll notice from some of the pics that even hanfu have a lot of different styles. some are wrapped around many times (Qin dynasty style) and some look like they have a tube top underneath (Tang dynasty style). each dynasty had their own style but all of them had an outer robe that gives you the signature crossover Y collar.

here's more pics:

Re: OFFICIAL Chinese Brides Thread! - updated w/ cake, traditional attire pics

hmm... i scoured chinatown a bit but they will charge you *alot*

the best bet for a *good quality hanfu* is to actually goto china/hong kong to have one made personally.

you can try to email [email protected] with a pic of what you'd like and get a quote from her too. she is the ebay hanfu seller. I am ordering a hanfu right now (not a wedding one) for a possible guzheng performance. I love my guzheng

making the hanfu will take at least 2 weeks- if you're strapped for time, i know that Eternal also has one tang style (tube top underneath) but it's a relatively simple one. If you have time, ask Coco at Eternal and tell her that Angela referred you. If she says she doesn't have one (because I don't think she knows she has one as not too many of her clients wear it), tell her to call me (the girl who took pictures in the ancient chinese costume) on the spot - she's got my number. i hope you find one eden!!!

Here's a pic of my guzheng (which I am selling in December to help finance wedding costs)
