Sparklers
Are sparklers illegal in NY? I wanted to get sparkler favors with a personalized matchbook tied with ribbon since I'm getting married on July 4th. My mom thinks that sparklers are illegal and they would not be able to be mailed to NY.

Re: Sparklers
Cute idea for the 4th of july..I think they might be illegal in NY but I was just in the poconos this weekend and you can buy them there in PA. I don't know about mailing..good luck!

Re: Sparklers
I don't think so. The Sand Castle provided them at my wedding (for a price, of course
). So I would think if they were illegal, they wouldn't be able to use them either, especially inside!

Re: Sparklers
They sell them in candy stores in NY- so I think they are legal. That is a cool idea.

Re: Sparklers
Karen,I see we have the same wedding date (and the same name)...I was thinking of the Sparklers too. I found them online and was really considering them.
I think you should call the hall and find out. Sparklers for the most part are legal in NY (as far as I know), however your hall may not want them.
Lots of luck to you...almost a year to go!

Re: Sparklers
Im almost positive Sparklers are illegal in NYC. Maybe the rules are different in LI??They haven't been illegal for very long. It was just after Guillani came into office I think. There was a big crackdown on little fireworks because of all the trouble they cause.
The reason I say this is because when I was looking for sparklers for a party a few years ago we had to drive all the way to Penn. to get them. All the NY stores said they weren't allowed to sell them.

Re: Sparklers
Just an FYI-I know you said you were going to use them as favors, which I think is a great idea. I just wanted to warn you or any other brides who were thinking of using them in place of birdseed, rose petals or bubbles...(I've shared this story before).
I wanted to use them, and bought about 500 of them on sale while I was in PA. Because there were so many extra, we decided to light some while we were camping. It's force of habit to shake them when you have them, and a piece came flying off and almost hit my friend. Thank goodness she jumped out of the way and it burned a huge hole in one of the lounge chairs!! This could have severely burned her! At that moment I had visions of this piece hitting a guest or my dress or veil and catching on fire!!! Of course, the idea of using sparklers was immediately thrown out the window, although I really had my heart set on using them. Just be careful, and I strongly discourage using them as you exit your ceremony area.
So anyway, I still have soooo many of these sparklers - if you would like to email me, I'd be happy to share them with you to give as favors! [email protected]

Re: Sparklers
I think the law is that you can't have fireworks that explode, but sparklers are okay.My friend got married and used them at her wedding instead of rice --> when she did her 'send off' at the end of the night. The one thing was -- they take a long time to get started up. Starting them with paper matches is especially annoying, so you might want to think about upgrading your matchbooks to matchboxes with wooden matches and/or having some groomsmen or friends stationed around with lighters to get everyone lit.
Also, she had a cute idea for handing them out - she got flower pots and filled them with styrofoam, with some dried moss on top for decoration. Then she just stuck the end of the sparklers in the pot, so everyone could take one.

Re: Sparklers
Thanks Marnles! I wrote you an email, I would love to have your extra sparklers! I was planning on giving them out at the end of the reception (6pm) so everyone can light them that night. I don't think it would be exciting to have them lit during the day.

Re: Sparklers
I am getting married July 4 next year, and my hall told me that I can't have sparklers, as it's not covered in their fire insurance.

Re: Sparklers
How cool --- another July 4th bride. I think that makes 3 of us now.I think I may hand out sparklers as part of the favor. I don't think the WCC will let us light them.
