Nothing is dumb. And we are all here to Answer for you. U have to go and apply for it. It is not something you get the day of. I believe You get it 60 days before but no later then 48 hours before or something like that!

You get the license @ a city hall (yes there is a 48 hr wait perios to get married
Then you get married -
The officiant performing the marriage fills out the license.
You mail it in ( keep Copies)
WE got ours a week later from NY State.
( we had a civil ceremony as well as what we are planning)
Sorry for any wrong wait time info- dh/fh friend is a judge and he married us. We mailed it in ourselves.

Actually, the officiant marrying you mails it in since he/she has boxes to fill in and sign it as well. You sign everything when you apply for the license, your witnesses sign it at the rehearsal or the day of the wedding. You should get the official copy with the raised seal about 1-2 weeks after you are married - depending on when your officiant mails in the license.

Re: Stupid Question but do you get your marriage certificate the day of the wedding?

you may also want to find out when your officiant needs it. Our pstor asked for it at the rehearsal, b/c she had an incident once, where the weddign was delayed 45 minutes, b/c someone had to go home & get it.

When it coems back in the mail, you will need the offical one for changing your name.
