Are you tired of the same old ceremonies? Do traditional weddings seem exceedingly cookie-cutter? If you're seeking a distinctive event that will linger in the minds of your guests for years to come, think about a theme wedding. If a theme seems like the way to go, proceed cautiously. Themes successfully set your wedding apart, but being too experimental could be both expensive for you and awkward for your guests.
Also realize that elegance will take a back seat to fun -- especially if your guests need to come in costume. Decide first what level of formality you wish to maintain and then let your imagination run wild.
Start by listing everything your wedding theme may affect, such as:
Location
Flowers/decorations
Style of the ceremony
Reception, including dancing, food and activities
Then, ask yourself these necessary questions:
How easy/difficult will it be to pull off?
Does the theme really excite us?
Will the theme put me over budget?
Will most of my bridal party and guests be game for a very different kind of ceremony?
Think about your hobbies, life experiences and background when brainstorming themes, and consider the adaptability and feasibility of each idea. Some common themes include:
Holidays: A holiday theme is a safe idea because decorations are plentiful and easily recognizable. Consider religious holidays, New Year's Eve, Valentine's Day or Halloween.
Decades: Themes can be created around these specific historical eras. For a clean-cut and classy look, decorate to match the styles of the 1920s. Or consider swing or jazz lounge themes (circa mid-1950s), which could carry over wonderfully from dress to decorations to even the reception band. You even can pull off a fun '60s or '70s theme but be prepared for all things elegant to fly out the window.
Country/western: This is perfect for a casual atmosphere. Dress can be informal and decorations can be everyday objects, from picket fences to hay bales. The food even can be home-cooked.
Ethnic: If you and your future spouse are of the same ethnicity, think about incorporating the wedding customs of your ancestors into the ceremony. Look to global traditions for inspiration and find ways to add world influences to your music, food and attire.
If you're worried about going overboard, the key to success is keeping it subtle. For example, if you're doing a '20s-themed wedding, incorporate only those elements of flapper fashions that give a feel of the period but also complement contemporary styles. Beaded dresses with plunging necklines, long strands of beads and narrow, pin-striped flannel suits with broad shoulders do a lot with just a little.
To keep things under control, restrict the fancy costumes to those actually in the wedding. This also spares guests who may not have the funds or the inclination to dress extravagantly. If a theme wedding seems like the path to happiness for you, have fun with it! It's a great way to express your creative side and craft a lovely and memorable wedding day.
