Anyone Move Recently?
Kind of a vent, but question at the end...lolso, before DH & I got married, he lived in Brooklyn (Bensonhurst) and I lived in Astoria, Queens.
I LOVED my neighborhood because there were so many great cafe's and lounges to just hang out or grab a cup of coffee. Awesome restaurants everywhere you turned and you could walk everywhere! from the nail salon to shopping - and there was so many great sotres near my home, no more than 2 blocks away. Granted, I have lived there all my life so i might be a bit biased
You didn't need a car there and i very rarely used mine.DH has always lived in Brooklyn, not necessarily where he lives now but he loves it there. Of course he knows all the in's and outs of his neighborhood. You need a car for EVERYTHING where he lives. Which, may not be a bad thing for some, but you can't even walk to a nearby supermarket. Gooing somewhere means having to locate parking nearby on city streets and finding parking is horrendous!
Before we got married, DH was adamant that he would not move to Queens. We had many a fight over this but in the end, I moved to Brooklyn. I don't Hate it there, but i'm so used to being able eto walk around and get out, even if just to enjoy the day and i can't do that here at all. i'm either stuck in the house all day or i have to drive where i have to go and then lose my spot by the new house and wait for hours to find a new spot, not to mention finding parking where ever i'm going.
I'm still down because i still don't know the whole neighborhood, so i can't just pick up and leave, unless i have my GPS - so sad.
Yeah i ised to stay with DH all the time before we got married, but it wasn't the same and we always did things together. Now, things i still need to get done, he won't do with me becayse he's busy doing his own thing and i can't stop and interrupt him every time i need to go to the supermarket, you know?
Anyone else missing where they used to live? Or going through anything similar?

Re: Anyone Move Recently?
what part of brooklyn are you in??the reason i ask is that it sounds like im in the reverse situation
i grew up in brooklyn and EVERYTHING was walkable!! grocer, fruitstands, bank, nail salon, clothing stores, shoe stores, etc etc etc
DH is from queens and he is so used to driving everywhere!!!
when we were looking for a place, we decided on queens since with our commutes it was the best for us. we looked in astoria and forest hills the most, since those spots you can WALK everywhere...and it was busy like what i was used to.
anyway, we wound up in northeast queens. we are close to bell blvd, so there is def things to walk to, including the train (which was a definite requirement of mine), but its def not like brooklyn. but its a good mix of car and walk
so what part of brooklyn are you in? i can suggest places. once you are more familiar with the area(s), you will be fine. i love brooklyn and i miss it. but my commute decreased by an hour each way, so i cant complain!!

One of the reasons i wanted to stay in Queens was because my commute was only about 20 minutes. DH works not too far from me, so his commute would have been the same. Now, we are in Bensonhurst, were he has always lived basically and the commute is about 1½ - ridiculous! i already told him i refuse to commute this long - waste time if you ask me, when we have kids.
nothing is really within walking distance. Where did you grow up in Brooklyn?

i grew up in b'hurst and live in bay ridge now ... never learned how to drive so b'hurst is walkable! lol ... there are a few good restaurants there but i will say there's way more in bay ridge ... waldbaum's is the largest supermarket but there are other small ones around ... as for costco, if you're not getting a huge amount of stuff, the D train takes you to 36th street and costco is up the block on 3rd ...

Re: Anyone Move Recently?
I only moved about 30 minutes from my hometown (further east) but it has been an adjustment. My commute is like almost an hour longer the cost of my commute went up like $150 - so those hurt pretty bad.
It's a new area for DH and I which is kinda nice - so we are both starting 'fresh.' It's still LI but Suffolk County to me just feels different since I'm all Nassau LOL
I told DH that when we buy a home I will NOT move further east if I am still commuting to the city - it's just insane (the cost mostly).
Unfortunately you have to kind of just get out of your comfort zone and figure out what works best for you. It hasn't been that long that you've been there so just be open minded to what is around you and I am sure you will find a routine and places to go.

i grew up in bensonhurst too, off the D line. its a great area!
find how to get to 86th street. you will love it! very walkable. at least one nail salon per block, tons of fruit/veggie stands, and they also have places to eat (a starbucks opened a few years back too), and stores to shop in.
18th avenue has lots of bakeries and nail shops too, if you just want to stroll around
bensonhurst is definitely walkable. bayridge too! and its not that far. def just look at a map and go exploring
if you stay inside, you will never know whats around you. just go explore and have fun!

Re: Anyone Move Recently?
I'm a transplant also. I'm from Toronto (a whole entire other COUNTRY). I did live in NYC before moving in with DH, and together we have lived in the W. Village, Brooklyn AND Queens (Forest Hills, where we are now), and the plan is to buy a house on LI soon-ish. It is still and continues to be an adjustment. I miss Toronto, I miss living in Manhattan, and when we buy a house in the suburbs I'll miss living closer to the city. I'm lucky to have friends all over the city - Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, LI - which helps, and I still use my GPS pretty much all the time. But I agree with the other suggestions - just start walking!! Its getting a bit cooler out so its lovely to take a long walk and even just get lost walking! You'll discover things you didn't know were around you. I do agree with you about adding commuting time being so annoying but ultimately you're in BK now for at least a little while so may as well make the best of it!I do totally feel your pain though, and for me anywhere we move that isn't Toronto is new and strange and unknown, so I definitely know where you're coming from.

We moved from Commack to North Babylon, and I feel as if we moved across the country! While I love being closer to friends and family, commack/east northport was such an idyllic town for us.Welcome New Vendors
